Such a beautiful (and beautifully crafted) building.

Just in case anyone was wondering; that heater above the entrance is an GEC Xpelair WH30. You can see its control box (metal box with the red knob). These were cabable of both hot and cold operation. That little repeater building would have got nice and toasty with that heater on full wack. 😁

The longer heaters (in cage) would have been damp/frost protection. Similar to the Dimplex type tube heaters heaters....except with more wack.

Excellent Video Lewis. 👍

These were mostly sold off by BT in the 90s or early 2000s at auction. Lots of people bought them very cheap thinking they could live in them. When they didnt get planning to do so, most fell empty and just sat there as there isnt anything you can do with them. Came across lots of people who caught a cold buying them and then just left them. Probably what happened to this one. (Ex estate agent of thirty years)

Poor little thing; she would have been so pretty back in the day 😢

what a lovely building that is , make a great hideaway fixer upper if it were for sale

Later, these buildings were replaced by small cast-iron, pressurised boxes located in shallow manholes (called footway boxes), with power fed down the cable. They were usually located every 4 or 5 miles on the coaxial network. You pressurised the box using a foot pump. Been there, done that!

I would love to own this one and use it as a radio shack.

The music works really well with this.

What a lovely looking old building and a great bit of history. Hopefully it will be saved. A number of these have been sold to private buyers. Lovely location too.

Im an ex BT technical officer,  most of the old TRS or  telephone repeater Stations were phased out as PCM (ETSI 30ch/G703/732), took over from the old CTE/FDM systems that carried groups, supergroups and hypergroups,  multiplexed speech channels.
TRS dont have a feed they are regen sites for the FDM line systems.
You can see the battery racks on the right hand side, no equipment racks in there.
Thats been out of service for decades.

Wow. Lewis, you really do research these topics amazingly deeply. That was a brilliant episode. You always make interesting content and your work is blumin excellent. Im so glad we have someone like you who keeps us entertained and informed in every single video. Thank you so much for your efforts over the years. Hope to work you on the bands sometime.  73 from East Sussex. M6Kii.

That could make a good bothy shelter for those walking the hills.

You do such an excellent job documenting these items that most people might overlook and never be curious about their usage.

I'm loving this type of vid.  I've always wanted to go into these unused old buildings that you show.

I never knew such a thing existed
There must be hundreds of them across the country.

It definitely looks like the equivalent of what we’d call a repeater hut here in the US.

I've been past that little building many times and wondered what is is.

I work in telecom. We have the Canadian version of these sites scattered across the country. Many of the buildings still exist today, More than likely this was a J-carrier repeater site, long distance FDM transmission. Where I’m at in Canada they phased these out in the late 50’s and replaced them with microwave (TD2) which also became relics of the past. The J-repeaters were about 40 miles apart.

If it is anything like what was used in the US telecom system, this would be an amplifier station for twisted pair cables.  Given the small size of the building, it was probably a small cable, maybe 24 or 48 pairs.  Each pair would be hooked up to an amplifier.  These would be the trunk cables that went from central station to central station.   The size of the cable (the number of twisted pairs) would depend on the traffic level and having spares available.  There would be back up batteries to the extent needed to power the amplifiers for a specific number of hours, whatever the standard would have been for BT.  Fiber optic cables need repeaters as well but not as often.

I enjoy watching your videos even though I have only a limited knowledge of radio and telecom.

Looks as it might have been a repeater station for a coaxial cable system. The building itself resembles hundreds of similar buildings that were used for small rural telephone exchanges with 200-line capacity. Most were brick-built, but stone was often used to suit local surroundings. Perhaps your local BT or PO engineers will tell you more.

This reminds me of several similar buildings along the A6 between Kendal and Shap. The one at the Shap summit has been converted into a bothy style accommodation for fell walkers .
