Final Report: https://bit.ly/PR-AFA
On August 13, 2014, a Cessna Citation XLS+ executive jet took off from Rio de Janeiro bound for Santos, carrying a presidential candidate who, in his last interview, said: "We cannot give up on Brazil." Sit down, here comes a story.
I've spent the last few months reading all the details of the CENIPA final report on this accident, and we're going to graphically show what happened on that day, August 13th. Everything we're going to talk about today is based on the CENIPA final report, the link to which is also in the description.
On that morning of August 13, 2014, a Wednesday, the day was beautiful in Rio de Janeiro, or CAVOK, in aviation terminology. But just 339 kilometers south of there, a cold front was approaching the coast of the Baixada Santista. Santos is a region known for sudden weather changes, and the runway is located among rugged terrain.
According to the flight plan, the crew planned to take off from SBRJ on August 13 at 12:29 PM (UTC) or 9:29 AM Brasília time, heading directly to the NAXOP position, intercepting airway W6 to the VUKIK position and, from this position, flying directly to SBST. They planned to fly at flight level 240, which is approximately 7,000 meters, and estimated an en route time of 40 minutes and a declared flight autonomy of three hours. In the fuel tanks, a total of approximately 3,755 lb, more than enough for the operation and return to São Paulo, which would be the next step. I will speak in local time from now on, because the reports are presented in UTC.
The crew requested flight plan authorization from air traffic control at 9:06 AM and started the Citation's engines at 9:14 AM.
On board were, in addition to the two pilots, five passengers, including presidential candidate Eduardo Campos.
