I know, I know. It's only just September.

But here in the UK, after what feels like an endless summer of heatwaves, something has definitely changed. There's a chill in the air again, the odd leaf is starting to fall and the kids are heading back to school. I'm calling it. Autumn is on its way.

And I'm very happy about it.

Autumn has always been my favourite season. I love the colours, the trees changing, the darker evenings and all those sounds that suddenly start appearing again. Crunchy leaves underfoot, rain outside, the crackle of a bonfire. There's something almost Pavlovian about it all. The first properly chilly day arrives and my brain immediately decides that cosy season has begun.

Or, dare I say it, spooky season.

So it seemed like a good time to make my first autumn sound of the year.

This is Autumnal Hum. Or, because apparently I can't resist messing around with perfectly good words, AutHumn.

The sound itself combines two quite different elements:

AUTUMNAL FIELD

Dry leaves, distant rainfall, soft wind and crackling wood blend into an organic soundscape recorded from the changing autumn environment.

LOW-FREQUENCY HUM

Deep, sustained frequencies create a steady acoustic foundation, reducing contrast and masking sudden background sounds that can interrupt rest.

A lot of the natural sound in this one comes from recordings I've collected myself. There's the sound of dry leaves and a crackling fire pit, field recordings from a maize meadow in Kendal, Cumbria, and rain hitting corrugated iron back home in Kent.

I didn't want it to become an obvious collection of autumn sounds like my previous autumn video, though. They're all blended quite deeply into the finished soundscape. Underneath everything is a continuous low-frequency hum that smooths the recordings together and gives the whole thing a much steadier character for sleep.

You can still hear autumn in there, but you don't have to actively listen to it.

And after months of trying to sleep through warm nights, I'm more than ready for this particular change of season.

Here's to cooler nights, better sleep and the beginning of my favourite time of year.

Sleep long and sleep well, my friends.

MADE USING: Dry leaves, crackling fire pit, field recordings from a maize meadow in Kendal, Cumbria, rain on corrugated iron recorded in Kent, low-frequency synthesis, harmonic filtering and layered sound balancing.
