Narration: It was morning; the entire family was sitting outside their house, chatting amongst themselves. Just then, some neighbors passed by.

Sunita (45) [Loudly]: Oh, Seema Ji, just look at their situation. How does Alok Ji's family manage to live in just one room? I mean, that single room houses their bed, their kitchen, and even their washroom.

Seema (40) [Laughing]: Seriously, my bathroom is bigger than their entire house. We wouldn't be able to live like that for even a single day.

Sunita (45) [Loudly]: And I’m worried about what will happen when their younger son, Aryan, gets married—where will they put the poor new daughter-in-law? I bet they’ll end up sleeping on a swing hung from the roof. Honestly, the daughter-in-law will probably run away the moment she sees a marital home that’s just one room.

Narration: Both women walk away, laughing. The entire family feels disheartened hearing this.

Aryan (25) [Loudly]: Mom, I’m fed up with listening to these people's taunts every single day. Narration: The entire family gathers in their small room. The room is in a sorry state; belongings are scattered everywhere. A small gas stove sits in one corner, surrounded by empty ration containers. A curtain hangs in the opposite corner, screening off a makeshift bathroom.

Shalini (28) [Loudly]: I am fed up. I am sick of this one-room house. I’m completely frustrated. Everyone insults us now; nobody respects us at all.

Avni (19) [Loudly]: Bhabhi, you’re absolutely right. The neighbors mock us constantly. They say, "Look, they only have one room." They hurl taunts and even abuse at us.

Narration: Just then, Alok-ji glances at an old, rusted iron cupboard standing in the corner of the room.

Alok-ji (55) [Smiling]: Let people say what they want. Let them taunt us. They will never know what lies behind this rusted cupboard.

Vasudha (50) [Smiling]: You’re right. No one would even dream that behind a house that looks like a single room, a secret world of 151 rooms lies hidden.

Narration: The whole family smiles as they look at the cupboard.

(Scene Change)

Narration: It was afternoon. Janvi’s father was sitting outside his house when Deepak arrived.

Deepak (55) [Loudly]: Look, Ramesh, you were an old friend of mine; that’s why I lent you that money. But what are you doing now? The interest keeps piling up. You don't even have the means to pay me back anymore.

Ramesh (55) [Pleadingly]: Come on, we’re friends, aren't we? Please understand my situation. I’m constantly ill. I’m the sole breadwinner of my family. It’s not like I’m running away with your money. You’re such a big builder; what’s the rush for the cash? Just give me a little time, and I’ll pay you back.

Deepak (55) [Angrily]: I don't care about any of that. I want my money.

Narration: Just then, Deepak’s son, Rocky, arrives.

Rocky (26) [Loudly]: Chill, Dad, chill. Why are you getting Uncle’s blood pressure up?

Rocky (26) [To Ramesh, affectionately]: Uncle, I’ve told Dad plenty of times—there’s a really simple way to handle this debt. Just get your beautiful daughter, Janvi, married to me. Dad will waive the entire debt. We don’t want a dowry or anything else.

Ramesh (55) [Angrily]: Deepak, make this good-for-nothing son of yours see reason. He even harasses my daughter on the street.

Deepak (55) [Laughing]: What am I supposed to tell him? My son isn't saying anything wrong. Either pay me my money, or marry your daughter off to him.

Narration: Janvi was watching all this from a distance. Deepak and Rocky leave. Ramesh walks into the house, looking dejected.

Janvi (22) [Angrily]: Papa, why do you listen to that nonsense from Deepak Uncle every single day? Why does he always say such vile things?

Ramesh (55) [Emotionally]: What can I do, beta? When you were little, Deepak and I were very close friends. Back then, his son Rocky was excellent at his studies. In a moment of enthusiasm, I promised him that I’d get Janvi married to Rocky. Now, that greedy man is holding onto that one promise.

Janvi (22) [Loudly]: Papa, we were just kids back then. Now, that Rocky has turned into a total low-life and a good-for-nothing loafer.
