In the late 1960s, Opel still wanted to compete with Mercedes in the luxury sedan market. The result: the Kapitän, Admiral, and Diplomat Type B.
Introduced in 1969, these imposing Opels remained deeply influenced by General Motors and American automotive styling. The Kapitän was the entry-level model, the Admiral occupied the middle of the range, and the Diplomat topped the lineup.

Under the hood, Opel offered several inline six-cylinder engines, up to 165 hp with fuel injection. But the most spectacular was the Diplomat, equipped with a 5.4-liter Chevrolet V8 producing 230 hp, paired as standard with an automatic transmission.
This large Opel could exceed 200 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 10 seconds.
In this new documentary from the Carnets de l’Automobile series, discover the complete history of the Opel Kapitän, Admiral, and Diplomat Type B between 1969 and 1977: their design, engines, equipment, handling, prices, and various evolutions.
We also revisit the astonishing Bitter CD, a grand tourer derived from the Diplomat, equipped with the same 230 hp Chevrolet V8.
Despite prices often being more affordable than those of competing Mercedes, BMW, or Jaguar models, these large Opels never achieved the hoped-for success. The Kapitän was discontinued in 1970, while the Admiral and Diplomat continued their run until 1977.
And you, which would you have chosen: Kapitän, Admiral, or Diplomat V8?
