I was born and raised in King County. The day after I retired I moved to Utah. Miss the trees and ocean but not the government, politics, rain or expense of Washington.

The Seattle freeze. People of Seattle are much colder to outsiders.

Betty McDonald wrote about the WA people going around, drinking whisky, banging their heads on the walls, crying "it rains, for the heaven's sake, it rains!"

I moved here when I was 10, back in 1995, when my parents and I relocated from the Los Angeles area.  So here’s my couple of pennies as a former WA outsider.

1. Give time to adapt.  If you’re coming from a warmer climate, prepare yourself, mentally, for 9 months straight of those gray skies and drizzle.  It’s honestly depressing and keeps you locked indoors until you acclimate.  I went from being the tanned and in shape CA kid, to pale and chunky in the span of fall to spring.

2. WA drivers are terrible.  Especially, and this may sound weird, but…particularly when it rains.  Counterintuitive, yes, but true.  And you really need to look out for those people driving a white, gray or black car when it’s raining.  They blend in if they don’t have their lights on.

3. It’s more expensive to live here than this video lets on.  For instance, I made $57 an hour, and could hardly support my family of 6.  Yes, I have a bigger family than most, but it takes roughly $130k a year to “comfortably” live in Snohomish County (north of Seattle and King County) for a family of 4.  On top of the median home prices hovering north of $600k for a basic 3 bed 2 bath, and rent well over $2k a month for a studio or one bed apartment.  If you don’t have a well paying job and make $150k or more in a year, you’re going to really struggle.

4. This may sound kind of pedantic, but some of the names of towns and cities are hard to pronounce, and we’ll know if you’re not from around here.  Probably two of the hardest for new comers are Sequim and Puyallup.  Just think of how you would say those, and understand you’re more than likely very, very wrong.

5. If you use an umbrella, that’s a dead give away you’re either a tourist or a transplant.  Washingtonians don’t use them.  We put on pants (sometimes), a hoodie, and just deal with it.  If you’re not growing moss you’re not doing it right. ;)

how do you like aberdeen as a living location?

Can't really say Washington has no state income tax anymore though. So now it's a high sales tax, capital gains tax, and a 9.9% tax on income over $1m.

Hi, I'm so glad I came across your video! I've had my heart set on Washington, preferably Olympia, for years even though I've never visited. What would you recommend (do's, don'ts, & cautions) a first time mover when they decide to move to Washington (like credit requirements, crime rate, employment/job market, will having a degree give me a better shot at landing a job, etc.)? Are there churches in the area? Is having a car better/easier for travel there, or is there reliable public transportation? Also, are the people friendly? What is health insurance like there? Are there housing navigators available in Olympia who can help me find an apartment that meets my needs? Thank you and apologies for the many questions!

Where is a reasonable place on the west coast of Washington to get a house with 5 acres minimum  but still be close to a town with everything. Also I'd want to be on the grid, plumbing not septic, and high speed internet. Also good schools are a plus.

What the worst areas of Metro Seattle?

I had to move my family because the drugs, property crime, and additional taxes.  The politics also didn't help, which caused the aforementioned problems.

Currently there IS  an state income tax, that was mislabeled as a "Billionaires' income tax". However, it is designed to  become a general income tax in the future.
There is an initiative to repeal this income on the current ballot in Washington.

There are some really misleading comments posted on  here so do your own research. I don’t know while they’re here in the first place anyway the rain or the mist is really just on the west side of the state once you get over to the east side you are in high desert, and then you go into desert.🎉

It rains in the morning in WESTERN Washington. You're suffering from that "we're the center of the world" bias so many in Puget Sound is afflicted with. And the income tax is clearly coming for all Washingtonians (the millionaires are just the camel's nose under the tent).

Hey! My wife and I are considering moving from Southern California to Washington State. I would love to move to Vancouver but my wife is black and absolutely despises the rain because of her natural hair. Do you have any advice? My second choice is Port Angeles, but travel is much more difficult. Less rain though I hear. We really don’t want to go east.
