After almost 30 years in Australia I've always considered myself as a migrant (from the UK) rather than an Expat. For me, an Expat is very similar as you describe, someone who goes to another country but lives in a little bubble of their own "cultural baggage". I've seen a lot of British Expats who live in their own British enclaves, watch mainly british TV shows, constantly compare to how things are in the UK (even if they've lived in Australia for decades) and have mainly British friends etc. I've seen plenty of Aussies move over to SE Asia and do the same thing. That's why I love your channel, because you truly are a migrant and show us how things are in Bali as well as teach ius about the local culture and language. Keep doing what you're doing.

I had a drink at the club house in Sanur listening to so call expats complaining about migrants in Australia not learning the language and not learning the Aussie culture and yet here they are living in another country not learning the language and the culture themselves. Keep up the great work Adam! Hopefully the so call expats can learn and appreciate the lifestyle Bali has to offer like you have. Respect 🙏🏾

From now on I am an EM !If I didnt make the move here to Indonesia I would still be working for a company that didnt appreciate my dedication and hard work,I would be paying a large percentage of my wage on an ever increasing rent and probably having to work way past retirement age.Even if I wanted to go back to Oz for 2 years to claim my pension I would be struggling to afford to live a basic life for that period of time.Yes, there are certain things I miss about Australia but I value my mental health more ,which has improved 100% living here.A very excellent video Adam.Thank you.

I really liked what you said, yes there is so much blame to migrants here in Australia, I came to Australia 50 years ago and because I speak English with a Spanish accent people still call me a migrant, no I am en expat 😂😂😂 from Chile, well now I am an Australian true blue. 😊😊😊

you are spot on Adam, I always say how hypercritical Aussies are about language in that we expect people to learn English when they visit but we do not learn other languages before traveling abroad and just expect the other countries to be accommodating to us.
The difference is a big part of the appeal to me, if I wanted the same I would just travel in Aus.

Hi. Good Vlog. Our Bali journey started about 14 months ago and after 3 trips we are starting to understand (early days) the customs and try and integrate without standing out or passing comment. This isn't hard for us because we are children of migrants to Australia. We are acutely aware of what our parents endured from the "local aussies" in the 50s through to the 90s and 2000s. everything you mentioned about learning the language and adapting were common phrases directed to our families. Going to Bali we were very adept at understanding and respecting the Balinese people and way of life. we are there to experience another way of life and not about imposing our value judgements. Ex-pat? The word has moved into our vocabulary because ether isn't something better. Economic tourist or visitor? for most. For us we want to experience a life that shines a light on our excesses and possibly taking Australia for granted.

This was a great chat Adam.
I moved to Hong Kong at the age of 50 with a teaching job under the NET scheme.
My husband stayed in Oz and went working in the mines.
We paid our mortgage off and saved enough to comfortably retire 13 years later when I returned home.
I too became an ex pat for the money and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. We would have not been in this position now if I stayed in Australia.
Never too old to take a chance and change your life.

Back in the 90s when I was living in Oz, a couple of young Aussie blokes used to shack up at my townhouse and learn Bahasa. They reckoned they’d head over to Indo one day to teach English. Turns out, the mad dogs actually ended up landing a gig teaching English for my late old man’s govvie company!

Hey Adam, Thank you for this one, very good explanations, i am considering to come to Bali for one year or maybe even two years  (i live in Denmark), and after Watching at least 50 of your shows, i feel more safe and well informed and  less insecure.. i have been visiting Bali 12 years ago with my ex wife, staying at Hyatt (sanur) and Gilli T Ubud and more , we were called high rollers back then, But now i divorced, and i left everthing to my ex. i only took all my guitar and music instrument, now i sold them and have some money, i have been many places around the world, But Bali was always my favorit place, My only challange is, i see so many different prices in rental for a place to stay, i have no big expectations, i just want small apartment or a decent Homestay,  as you say in this video Rent a place to live can kill your economic fast...
do you have any contact, some one  to recommend, or do you not want to be involved in this :-) ..  
your channel is superior, to everything else i found here at YT. Thanks.
