A few people have asked whether “Bohemian Rhapsody” was Freddie Mercury writing about AIDS or knowing he was going to die. The timeline tells us that is very unlikely: the song was written and recorded in 1975, while Freddie’s AIDS diagnosis came much later, commonly reported as 1987.
That said, the song absolutely carries a feeling of confession, fear, fate, judgment, and mortality, which is why many listeners connect it with Freddie’s later life. Freddie was famously private about the song’s meaning, and even Queen members have said he never fully explained it. That mystery is part of what has made “Bohemian Rhapsody” so powerful for nearly 50 years.
For this channel, we love adding a little “behind the song” context, especially from the classic rock era. Having worked in and around the music industry during that period, I know how much craft, risk, and studio imagination went into songs like this. It was not just a hit single; it was a bold piece of musical theatre, rock, opera, and emotion all in one.
So while it was not literally about AIDS, it remains one of the great songs about inner conflict, drama, and human fragility. That is why Nene taking it on is such a brave and meaningful performance.
