Europe and Switzerland are rearming. But there's a shortage of soldiers. Who will fight when push comes to shove? Is conscription necessary again? A conscientious objection hearing? And is the state even allowed to force people to kill? A debate about security, war, and peace.
Topics in this episode:
0:00 Going to war for your own country?
13:36 Would you rather live under occupation than be free?
19:36 Is Switzerland capable of defending itself?
28:38 What exactly are we defending?
35:34 What is the significance of cyberattacks?
44:07 Why are older people in favor of conscription and younger people against it?
50:48 The keyword is conscientious objection hearing. How is it assessed?
Rearmament doesn't just cost money. Someone has to be able to operate all those weapons. So who will stand at the border if Russia attacks? "Certainly not me," says Ole Nymoen. His book, "Why I Would Never Fight for My Country: Against Military Fitness," recently sparked heated debates and sparked outrage. Many young people share his views. Even in Switzerland, the willingness to perform military service has declined—precisely now, as war has been raging on the European continent for almost four years. As a result, civilian service is to be made less attractive, and conscientious objection may be reintroduced.
So, who is prepared to fight? And is it morally justifiable to force people to kill? Yves Bossart discusses these questions with philosopher Katja Gentinetta, military expert Georg Häsler, and German author and podcaster Ole Nymoen.
