I'm an older gay man and I have to agree with your mom about being slower to adapt to people's pronouns.  In the 1990's when I was in my 20's and we were fighting so hard for gay rights.  I was not a very good ally for trans people.  I was never against trans people, but I felt like having trans people connected to gay and lesbians made our fight harder. I felt the same way with the bisexual community.  I have to say I'm ashamed of what my thoughts where back then and I am an openly trans ally now.  I use my pronouns at work and in my personal life and I try to be as supportive as I can be. I stand up for trans rights every chance I get.  I feel I need to make up for my short comings all those years ago.

Dude your mom is so amazing— I wish all the best and blessing for her! I wish my mom understood me like that, she think she does but she doesn’t. Instead of seeing me as her trans son, she just sees me as her “two-spirit daughter” and that the closest she wants to come to ACTUALLY seeing me..😔

I’m absolutely just blown away by the emotional intelligence your mom is displaying, as well as the forethought she put into every interaction she had raising you. This is a textbook example of what I needed when I came out in 2016, and I wish this video existed back then.

Judging by the conversations with my mom they’re very much alike in this situation if I saw this five years ago I’d definitely send it to her but thankfully now the dust has settled and we’re in a good spot. Not queer, nor am I even a parent yet, but in this landscape, I just want to know how others are getting by and what to expect if I DO have a queer child. I already know I’d love them regardless, but I think what draws me to these types of videos is my curiosity to how people adjust to these situations or raise kids despite their differences, and when I say that, I mean in a more practical sense. Like, how do you have these conversations with other family members or young siblings, how do you support them if they’re being bullied in school for it, etc. The best answer I found was probably from a Reddit post when a parent was worried about the same this, but he taught his child comebacks to use on bullies and help build the kid’s confidence, and tidbits like that really give me hope and help me feel better equipped. Great video, and thanks for putting this vulnerable stuff out there!

I didn't even think a parent could be this considerate when it came to queer especially trans children (maybe just cause of my first hand experience with mine), most think saying ok I accept you it's fine is enough when it isn't. She absolutely supports you and that's so so amazing

your mom is an amazing human. it makes me sad that her response isn’t the more normal response when someone comes out in general that is different than “societal norms” .. if you love your child, a parent should do exactly what she did! educate yourself and try to understand your child. kudos to her she is so emotionally intelligent and it shows!!

This reminds me of me and my son that came out as gay as a sophomore in college. I was always accepting but when it was MY son, I did lots of research and made friends with people in the community that could help me understand things I had questions about. Now, him being gay isn't really even a topic unless we have something we want to talk about it. Thanks for doing this talk.

I really liked the part about if you don’t feel confident that a conversation is going to be safe, don’t have it. I’ve been debating if I should come out to my parents, and the reality is, it does not feel safe in the slightest. Thanks for that. Both of you.

Thank you for this video! I am also ftm, but I had to cut both of my parents because they were hostile to me coming out. My mother chose her pride over me and referred to me as a daughter until the last time we spoke 5 years ago.

Seeing accepting and kind mother like yours gives me hope that ftm kids can still be loved, and that transformation is worth it.
