This fascinating Royal Navy film from 1966 takes us into the specialised world of naval mine warfare, an important but often unseen part of keeping the seas and shipping lanes safe.
The film looks at the different threats posed by naval mines and the methods developed by the Royal Navy to detect, sweep and neutralise them. We see specialist mine countermeasures vessels at work, including HMS Montrose M1204 and HMS Bronington M1115, along with the equipment and techniques used to deal with different types of mines.
Particular attention is given to the increasingly sophisticated mine threats of the period. These included magnetic and acoustic mines, which could be triggered without a ship ever physically touching them.
The film also gives us a rare look at the dangerous work of Royal Navy Clearance Divers. These highly trained men were required to approach underwater mines, identify them and make them safe.
Produced during the Cold War, Under Sea War offers a fascinating insight into the ships, technology and specialist personnel involved in protecting Royal Navy vessels and merchant shipping from a weapon that could remain hidden beneath the sea.
This film forms part of our Royal Navy Heritage Collection, a growing collection of original Royal Navy films that we are preserving, scanning and making available for people to see again.
Many of these films now survive only as ageing 16mm prints. Our aim is to preserve them digitally while retaining as much of the original image, sound and character of the film as possible.
This copy of Under Sea War has been scanned frame by frame from the original 16mm film and carefully prepared for viewing.
