On October 1979, Pope John Paul II embraced Fulton Sheen at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and told him: “You have written and spoken well of the Lord Jesus. You are a loyal son of the Church.”

I was raised catholic and graduated 8th grade from parochial school. During the whole time I was at parochial school, I was never encouraged to read the Bible, let alone study and meditate on it. I attended mass every Sunday and Holy day. I was an alter boy for 3 years. I knew the Latin Mass, the rosary, the stations of the cross, the confessional, I was confirmed, I received communion, memorized the catechism, but I was never encouraged to read the Bible. In fact, I never heard of a Bible study happening at any time in any catholic church. I have also asked former catholics, "Were you ever encouraged to read the Bible?" And the answer was always, "NO!" I do not doubt that there are saved catholics and that they read the Bible on their own, but for the time I was in the catholic church, never.
