◼︎ Korea Travelogue - Our Paradise, Gangwon Part 2: Isolated Houses, How They Live (2016.01.05)

Gangwon-do, surrounded by layers of deep valleys and where approximately 82% of the total area is mountainous! In remote mountain valleys that only those in the know can visit, there are people living in their own world.

I Like Hot Things! The Couple Kim Jong-su and Hyun Mi-jeong. Kim Jong-su and Hyun Mi-jeong are a couple who have been living for 25 years in the embrace of Mindungsan Mountain in Jeongseon, Gangwon-do, where white snow gently wraps around them! Although there is no electricity, the soft glow of candlelight illuminates their home; and while they draw water from the mountain due to the lack of running water, they are grateful for even the inconvenience because that water allows them to use a "special refrigerator." The couple, who insist on eating all their food hot to stay healthy through the long winter, diligently set out to gather firewood. They find it difficult to leave the spot, captivated by the snowy winter scenery of Gangwon-do that they encounter while chopping wood. We visit Kim Jong-su and Hyun Mi-jeong, a couple spending a warm winter with happiness that is not just anyone can possess, yet is accessible to everyone.

◼︎ Travelogue of Korea - Sancheong Part 3: Entry Restricted to Few Households Only (May 17, 2010)

This is the place where the Jirisan Asiatic black bears were released, referred to as the last hidden scenic wonder of Jirisan. It is "Jangdanggol," a name derived from the fact that the valley is long and deep. Jangdanggol is a place that was once the home of slash-and-burn farmers who settled deep in the mountains to cultivate fields and make charcoal. While over 30 households once lived there, they migrated to the lower village of Daepo. For the past decade or so, only a single house has remained in Jangdanggol, guarding the valley.

Jangdanggol is one of the most remote areas in Sancheong; residents draw water from the valley stream for drinking, gather branches to light fires in traditional hearths, and live by candlelight without electricity. Despite the hardships, the couple cultivates persimmon trees and plants chili pepper seedlings in fields that have been tended by their parents' parents—who were slash-and-burn farmers—creating a secret haven within the breathtaking scenery where they can live a self-sufficient life using the products provided by the mountains, valleys, and nature of Jangdanggol.

However, only five households are allowed to enter this area. Along with Mr. and Mrs. Kim San-ok, who live in the only house in Jangdanggol, there are four other households that have cultivated fields in Jangdanggol for generations and continue to tend persimmon orchards there. Thus, only five households possess the keys to enter Jangdanggol.

Winter fills the valleys of Jirisan.

The bitter cold arrives in haste, arriving earlier than the villages below, only to flee belatedly.

However, the winter life of the people of Jirisan is not entirely harsh.

Thanks to the mountain spirit of Jirisan, who embraces those within its bosom so they do not go hungry.

The people of Uisin Village in Jirisan intend to rely on the generous embrace of Jirisan for this year as well.

We are heading to Uisin Village in Jirisan, a place where the spirit of the mountain and the spirit of the people connect, to welcome the first month.
