What I packed vs. what I actually used (Edinburgh sketchbook tour) ✏️

Katie Moody

Part 2 is here! In this video I'm sharing what I actually used from my travel sketching kit (spoiler: not everything 😅) plus a mini tour through my finished Edinburgh sketchbook.

If you saw last week's video, you'll know I packed... quite a lot!! So today I'm sharing what earned its place, what didn't leave my pencil roll once, and what I wish I'd packed instead. I also talk through the trip and the pages themselves whilst chatting about how each one came together.

Thank you so much for following along with this one, it's been really fun sharing the whole process and hope you enjoy the tour! Katie x

Katie, I absolutely love the way you approach sketchbooking! 🥹🎨 Your pages always feel so full of life, and I love how you combine watercolour, gouache, pencils and other media without making the process feel overly precious or restrictive.

Your recent travel and plein-air sketchbook work is especially inspiring. The way you capture little moments, colours and details while still keeping everything playful is beautiful. 🤎

I also love how genuinely curious you are about art supplies and how you experiment with different combinations to see what works. Your videos always make me want to grab my own sketchbook and start painting! ✨📖

Sketchbooking is just the perfect way to hold memories and you always inspire me to take mine with me 🥰

So impressed with your travel-vlog experiences & can see progressions that inspire me to keep going as well. Ty katie for bringing us along, & thanks also to mitch for being your get-you guy, from photos to obvious to us supportive encouragement.

I really like that your art is so unique and personal to you. I’ve always thought you have your own specific style where we can always immediately recognise your work as yours and that’s so refreshing to see. Always enjoy seeing your work and hearing about the process and the stories behind them, even the ones that may not have a story and are just mundane moments! Beautiful and creative as always

I think people shouldn't worry so much, that they should take the supplies they want, and if weight or size is a problem, they could focus on taking lighter supplies (breaking neocolor 2s, smaller or broken colored pencils, a thinner and lighter palette, etc). They should pack what makes them happy, pack what they think they will use and keep in mind what will be kept with them in a backpack/purse and what can be kept at their sleeping location (hotel, tent, etc). You had one roll up and a small sketchbook so I think what you packed was perfect.

I absolutely love what you created in your travel sketchbook so far! I completely understand that feeling of bringing more on a trip than necessary. I think if I had to limit supplies for a recent trip I would pick my set of Derwent Inktense pencils and Derwent water brush. Plus a waterproof fineliner pen. That way I could do wet and dry and not take as much supplies. - Christina Vourcos

Really like the first two pages. The swatching behind and the flaps are awesome. The Kelpies and the atmospheric lake are so cool. The smaller lady in the coffee shop looks like she's further away.

Love the Coos and the Kelpies! Hope you had a wonderful Birthday trip, Katie. I always wayyyy over pack. Love the sketchbook you made and how you used it, great captured art and memories.
Thanks for sharing. 🌻

Hullo Katie, I have packed art supplies and I have never regretted bringing to much, but always the one or two thing that I left at home thinking “ aww I am never gonna need that” turns out another paper surface is always a better option to pack! Better to pack that extra book or pad of paper than leave it at home then desire it on location! I love that you made your own book for the trip and took photos that can be added after you get home! Stress free travel painting!

Your travel journals are always so inspiring.
I giggled at the footage of you painting on the boat and hold your brush in your mouth - must art anywhere to capture the moment 😂I love it!

I think they are cows I am not sure...I do not think we have them in California! thank you for sharing....the double spread with the house was one of my favorite as well. I do like the chairs too....I am obsessed with chairs, doors and windows. Thank you again❤ be well!!

I love the Kelpies! I look forward to seeing what else you add into this travel sketchbook. Those ideas you mentioned would be fantastic. - Christina Vourcos

Lovely, Katie, as always! And I love your sweater, too :) It makes me want to get back into knitting since it has such an interesting stitch pattern. Hope all is well 💚

What a good refresh on my explore page! Lovely video as always!🥰

Very sweet. I love the tiny sketchbook. But, consider keeping the dry media/markers. So quick to get the bones down. Instant dry. My companions hate waiting for my paint to dry. Waah!

Scotland is such an amazing place and I love seeing your sketchbook tour. I have been trying to paint the Highland coo ever since I visited and I just can’t seem to get it.
