The only unfortunate thing with my approach is that the pipe is just slightly too large to fit into the fitting of the mower deck, so I turned down just over half the length of the pipe. If you can find solid round stock that fits the fitting or pipe so you don’t have to perform that step it would be an extremely simple diy project. Jim
I made these tonight. Thanks for sharing. Lowe’s only had one style of 3 inch single pin caster. One with a locking wheel. One without. Both were 110 lb rated. Looks like plastic and rubber wheels. I used 3/8 inch holes for casters and “ security pin” holes. I used 18inch black pipe, threaded, and had to grind it down a good bit on my bench grinder but it worked. Just realize that the locking pin holes are at opposite angles. One angle for “driver side” one angle for “passenger slide” . The black pipe is a bit soft surprisingly. So don’t over tighten your casters or the pipe will squash. Ask me how I know…. Overall great idea, fairly inexpensive cost compared to alternatives. Even cheaper if you have the casters and pipe on hand. I did use 18 inch pipe and that seems stable enough. 7.5 inch’s for the locking pin holes worked great. I may try to find a higher rated caster wheel. Be aware customer reviews say harbor freight casters are metric and not 3/8 and the metric nuts are reportedly hard to find. It may be an Amazon search to get a higher rated single pin caster. Overall this was a pretty easy project with the bench grinder (patience required). 👍🏻💪🙏 Thank you!
Hey Jim, that was some good thinking! Looks like it works great. I may have to try and make up a set. Thanks for sharing and giving a detailed explanation of what you did. Having a lathe must be very nice at times!
Would 24" pipe be more stable? Did you turn the pipe down to 1.010", the hole is 1.020". Does it need to be tight in the hole? Did you take off the mounting hardware at the front of the mower?
