What happened to Windows NT, the ambitious operating system that Microsoft once built for high-end computers and businesses? Though it struggled at first, Windows NT eventually became the technological foundation behind modern Windows.

Developed under legendary engineer Dave Cutler, Windows NT was designed to be stable, secure, portable, and powerful enough for the future of computing. But when Windows NT 3.1 launched in 1993, it demanded expensive hardware, consumed enormous amounts of memory, and had only a small library of native software.

Over time, faster processors and cheaper memory changed everything. Windows NT evolved through NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 before its architecture finally reached ordinary home users with Windows XP.

The Windows NT name eventually disappeared, but the technology underneath it did not. Its architecture continued through later versions of Windows and became the foundation of the Windows operating systems used on PCs, workstations, servers, and other Microsoft platforms today.

In this documentary, we explore the rise of Windows NT, Dave Cutler’s engineering vision, Microsoft’s battle to build a next-generation operating system, the early failures of NT, and how a product once considered too heavy and expensive ultimately became one of the most important foundations in computing history.
