CORRECTION: As many people have pointed out the nickname bestowed by the RAF was indeed "Oxbox" not "Oxbow". Not quite sure how I made that mistake, misread it somehow. Apologies for confusion and thanks to all who offered correction.

My late father was a pilot in Bomber Command and, for one of his birtlhdays when he was in his eighties, I presented him with models of all the aircraft he had flown - from the Miles Magester up to the Handley Page Halifax - on a board painted to replicate 102 Squadron's Pocklington airfield. He immediately lent over and lifted up not the exact detailed replica of Halifax HR919 that had taken me weeks to put together but the humble Airspeed Oxford - the safe, comforting friend that reminded him of the sheer joy of flying amid a time of such turmoil and tragedy.

SMASH! Ed NASH is back! My favorite.

One of those blokes that founded Airspeed was a young engineer called Neville Norway fresh off assisting Barnes Wallis building the successful R100.  Some of you may be old enough to know of this gentleman's other career by the name Neville Shute the author of "On the Beach" and  "A Town like Alice".  You can read all about it in his autobiography "Slide Rule".

"Blokes in sheds' they may be, but "Airspeed' is a pretty kick arse name!

Someone who went to work for Airspeed in 1946 as a young aerodynamicist  was Roy Boot who later in his career was heavily involved with the development of, amongst other aircraft, the Buccaneer and Eurofighter Typhoon.

Where would the MoD be without the 44th Men in Sheds Division.

Interesting note:  the chief designer at Airspeed, who designed the Courier, Envoy and Oxford, was the future well-known novelist, Neville Shute, author of such novels as "A town Like Alice" and "On the Beach".  He also wrote "Slide Rule", which was a memoir of his days in the British aviation industry during the 1920s, 30s and 40s.  In addition to working for Airspeed, Neville Shute also worked on the design of the famous British airship "R-100", the one which flew successfully to Montreal and back and which, unlike the infamous "R-101", DID NOT crash.

A bright & sunny morning just got better, when Mr. Nash posts!

Huh! Coincidences! I have the Special Hobby 1/48 model of this very aeroplane! Yesterday I opened the box to begin building it - and this morning this excellent video popped up! Great for refs!

There's so many things and people in the background who keep things going. It's good to shine some light on them from time to time.

Humble transport, you say, and show the XC-99! Thanks!!

"Airspeed" and "Supermarine" are among the coolest names for any aviation company.

Excellent return to form. From the back of my memory vault comes the nickname 'Oxbox', not Oxbow.

Sir, I am thankful that you have continued to make videos. You probably don't put much stock in what some old geezer in the Southern California desert thinks, but your channel is one of my favorites. I appreciate your coverage of Myanmar and other modern conflicts, which really speaks to your genuine humanity and concern for others. That said, your videos of obscure, and not so obscure, aspects of aviation history are what I enjoy most. Thank you for bringing these to us. You are a treasure.

I'm really glad to see you back. You have a great voice and do really good concise videos. I appreciate anything you bring us.

Just when i was about to go to bed. Perfect timing.

Thanks for giving the OxBox it’s time to shine. It’s deserving of your attention. And if anyone would care to have a rather neat 1/72 diecast model of this essential little plane, there’s a choice of three different schemes to be had from ~ where else ~ Oxford Diecast.

Most appreciated, Ed!  May your skies ever be clear of drones!

"Blokes in sheds are the cornerstone of British innovation" Truer words, rarely spoken.
