As someone who’s very familiar with Wukong‘s mythology, the game is one of my all-time favorites. It’s essentially a sequel to the novel and somehow manages to be 99% lore accurate while also taking some small creative liberties that even improve the original story and deepen its characters.

Khazan and Wukong are so good. Khazan has the best combat, maybe of any game. Wukong has awesome combat and great exploration. I was surprised by the exploration because I'd heard it was linear with invisible walls everywhere. In reality, the game has tons of secrets, including entire zones, bosses, and storylines.
The combat of Khazan was some of my favorite of any game. It was so fast, and smooth. The combos you could do were amazing. I slept on it the at first, came back to it months later, and it became one of my favorite souls-likes combat wise for sure. The story was mid, and predictable, but the combat made up for that tenfold
Disclaimer: I didnt see the portion of the video where he talks about khazan until just before editing this comment, so when I said I disagree, I'm actually agreing with all of what this man said, in the comment below, since he mentions everything bad that I also did. He just appens to mainly care about the combat, so its fine, but I'll still leave the critic down below.
Wow I really disagree. First for me wukong isn't a soulslike, but if it is... still not better than lies of p both as a soulslike and as a game in general. I dont have many issues with wukong besides from the story. Its really just makes no sense if you dont know anything about the work it is inspired on. I can understand someone who prefers wukong as an action game. I feel the same about khazan. But as a soulslike? No. But thats not whats bafling to me. Khazan is just not that good. Dont get me wrong, its an amazing game that has one of the best, if not(debatable) the best combat system in any soulsgame. But its laking in soooo much more than that, and I hate to say this but, I dont think its even subjesctive. The side quests are just straight up bad, lets all agree on that. The exact same places just reorganized, the reason why you're doing them is always the same, they are unbelivably repetitive, the bosses are the same with increased health bars while aplying status effects to you with one hit. They are artificially difficult, except they arent difficult, just boring to fight, deminishing the side mission as a hole and the boss that it is copying as well. At the start of the game I thought the game was really cool artistically. At the start, because after that, every scenary is so generic, its very boring to look at. After 5 minutes you have experienced everything that the level has to show you, and then you just want to be done with it and get to the boss already, to engage with the thing thats actually good about the game. The take they have in the khazan story is also just not interesting, its fine. Actually, it could be interesting, but its there so much just for the sake of being there, that the only moment that you care and that they give it any attention is literally the games ending. Again, what makes it good is the combat and I get that, but I dont understand how that makes it better than lies of p. At all
I'm a little bummed you mentioned Mortal Shell, but didn't state your opinion on the hardening mechanic. That's by far my favorite thing the game offers. The bosses are definitely lacking though.
I played AI Limit recently and I really like it. Yes, it is low budget game and therefore it has a problem with variety of everything from weapon animations to enemies, but the level design was good and this game has some of the best mechanics in the whole sub-genre.
Wukong actually surprised me a lot. Even if it's not a soulslike, you can play the as if it were when you get the spellbinder. Learning erlang's moveset was the most fun I had in those games (I genuinely think he has more moves than radahn consort)
Playing blasphemous 2 now and I'm loving it. Challenging and interesting enough to keep me hooked. Wasn't into 2d games until my buddy talked me into salt and sanctuary. Now I've beaten it, 9 sols, blasphemous, and working on blasphemous 2 and prince of Persia now. Nice change of pace
