Fun fact: The canon explanation for Birdie having lighter skin in SF1 is that he was really sick at the time.

Ok but what about the most iconic one and done fighting game character, guy I fought on ranked

The whole K9999 situation can be summed up in one quote

"I love lying"- Bryan Danielson

"If SNK had to keep bringing back Rugal in every entry, Mexico would declare war on Japan."

This guy...this guy gets it.

The whole K9999 situation makes me wonder if they were trying to do some kind of ARG with it. Like, K9999 goes off the radar and actively starts destroying records of his own existence so he can do his own thing? But all the weirdness from SNK themselves does kinda throw a wrench in that.

The fact that the whole K9999 situation was just a fucking ARG made by the devs bc they thought it would be fun is THE most insane thing I've seen in years. I love it. This is what I wanna do when I become a game dev.

SNK really reached out to the fan base to make sure they were't being "Morbius'ed". Smarter than other companies.

Canon may treat them like a joke but the concept of canceling out Rugal’s projectile with a basketball is so damn rad

The goofiest thing about Xanadu, is that Kukri, a character who has some mystical ties, responds to Xanadu's gibberish with gibberish of his own, implying that either Kukri is fucking with him by playing along, or Xanadu's "god" is some actual mystical thing.

"Their idea of exotic was a black guy" fucking kills me

I love that they seemed to name Kronen after David Cronenberg. Double downed on “yeah this guy is a reference.”

I have never seen a character with a weirder history than K9999. Like, I cannot fathom what the developers were cooking and I'm pretty sure it wasn't food

Fun Fact: Retsu almost got a playable appearance in Capcom Fighting Evolution/Jam, alongside an entire SFI section of the cast, including Eagle and a pre-scar Sagat

Fun fact, with ghostface in MK1, the alternate two ghostfaces (I think the assassin and the enforcer iirc) are just kira and Kobra in ghostface robes, same moves and everything

That entire K49 segment was wild, I was blown away by the sheer audacity of everything surrounding this character.

You know I don't think SNK planned to have the conspiracy around K9999 to go on for so long, but having not just one but two bancruptcies and buyouts to deal with likely put a hold on those plans for a good while.

Fun fact: 'Him in a dress' might actually be the most popular character in the series

Note: we have a new poll that shows that him is still most popular. The top 10 highest voted SF characters with vote counts are:
Ryu 5952, Chun-Li 3610, Ken 2753, Akuma 2331, Cammy 1896, Juri 1469, Sakura 1245, Zangief 906, Guile 674, (technically Akira Kazama 561) Blanka 530

I think it would be real funny if Q returned in SF6, with zero elaboration

I will admit the K9999 stunt absolutely got me too, in this video alone. I went from just learning about his existence to cheering for his return in the span of about 10 minutes!

My theory about Khronen is that the constant retconning was a meta arc.
Khronen's existence was being memoryhole'd by the organization that made him to avoid culpability for what he'd do, and he played along to bide his time and find out who he really is. So, while they destroyed any and all records of his existence, he and those who stuck with him just refused to acknolwedge who he was and used it to find out who he IS. Hence why the artist who had specifically pigeonholed himself into drawing him simply drew "a guy in a big green hoodie." It was him, but laying low.
Maybe at one point it was a legal concern, but they moved past it and realized they had an interesting angle to work with and just rolled with it.
