i put a 5150 overdrive pedal with the noise gate and boost and got as much gain as i could need. sounded so good, it was plugged into a orange cab with v30s

Not the same bro, it just sound like a boss distortion pedal, the hairy good stuff is on the natural harmonics of that head, so u need some sort of attenuator

I’m far from a great player,but I’ve always been complemented by my tone! No pedals used! I crank my Marshall’s up using a Dr Z attenuator, the tone comes from the AMP itself!

the other way to go is to get a master volume mod, maybe LarMar PPIMV

Yes you have an EQ. I use a Boss EQ-20 it turns my rig into a beast the most important pedal on my paddle board. I know they got the new boss EQ foot pedal but The EQ-20 for the price is a bad paddle check it out for yourself you might replace that little Boss-7.

Excellent gear man,  i dig that Charvel & you have the best amp options covered.  Nice playing too. This does sound good & I also play an overdrive into a Marshall.  But i am interested in trying a dimed plexi into an attenuator or load box.  That seems to give the real EVH sound, if that is wanted.

I have a 2018 1959hw and it is so much louder than any of my other amps it's ridiculous lol.  I have Supros, Blackstars, Fenders & a JVM205h.  I had to bite the bullet and buy a Boss waza TAE to tame my plexi.  Super worth it!

DS-1 sounds great. Gets the job done. A more versatile pedal than commonly thought, but recently has been getting more props on the 'Tube. You mentioned that your DS-1 is modded. What did the mod do?

The only thing I'm wondering: is that just the sound of a pedal board setup? If I replaced the Superlead with any old hifi or PA power amp and the speaker connections, would I get the same sound? Also what happens if - with the volume very low on the amp - you clean boost the input? Can you get more crunch/overdrive of the pre-amp at lower volumes this way?

What speakers do you have in the cab?

I see that you’re plugged into the high input 2 on the Super Lead. Stock that would be a very dark input and channel one is very bright until cranked up. Have caps been removed or changed on your input volumes?

I'm some cases I actually prefer this sound/method. Works very well for any situation. This way you can play any volume anywhere. Very adaptable from bedroom to stadium. Nothing wrong with using a pedal, A lot of my heros used pedals. Hendrix used a fuzz and wah, Gilmour used a big muff, Dave Murray, RR, Hillell Slovak uses the d+. Frusciante ds2, jimmy  page tonebender, Evh had eqs in his chain, boosting mids and gain and used a variac as an attenuator, Iommi used a treble booster. All because high gain amps werent invented yet. But I might argue that a pedal hitting the front of a NMV amp cuts through like a knife WAY better than your modern high gain amps. Specially in a band mix where it really counts. I love modern high gain amps don't get me wrong, but I've found this to be a thing. Shit even a cranked 5 watt tube amp can be too obnoxious at home  sometimes and needs this treatment. It's high gain it's been around since Hendrix externally from the amp and then since basically the 90s built into the amps.

A volume pedal will work pretty good as well.
