In this episode of Kung Fu Talk, we step onto the leitai and take a deeper look at Sanda, also known as Sanshou, one of China’s most important modern combat sports.

Is Sanda simply “Chinese Kickboxing,” or does that description leave out a major part of what makes the sport unique?

We discuss the technical differences between Sanda, Muay Thai, and Kickboxing, including the integration of punches, kicks, catches, sweeps, takedowns, and throws. We also explore what happens when fighters from other striking backgrounds enter Sanda competition and have to adapt to a completely different ruleset and strategy.

But this conversation goes beyond techniques.

What is the relationship between Sanda and traditional Kung Fu? Should Sanda be viewed as a modern Chinese combat sport, an expression of traditional Chinese martial arts, or as something that has developed into its own fighting system?

We also talk about strategy at the competitive level, preparing for opponents, common mistakes made by beginners, fighting on the leitai, physical conditioning, and the future evolution of Sanda.

If you practice Sanda, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, MMA, or Chinese martial arts, this is a conversation you don’t want to miss.
