I have the Aiyima T20 and Fosi GR70 on trial and I have to say, you've done a wonderful job of describing them. I'm using them with KEF LS50 METAs and Maggie LRS+ hooked up to a Fosi ZA3 and FiiO K11 R2r Dac, and your extensive, in-depth description of their characteristics is dead on 100%. Thanks so much for your honest, unbiased review. I agree with the fellow who says you deserve so many more views.

I just wanted to mention that too many people describe tubes as a means to add warmth, but I think they're missing the point of tubes. Tubes can add a 3rd dimension, a realism that we're all looking for. Warmth is good, but a 3D space is the best reason to seek out tubes. The Fosi GR70 is very successful in that regard. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for sharing Nick! I have the Aiyima T20. I swapped out the PSVane standard UK 12ax7 tubes with the PSVane Horizon 12au7 tubes. I also swapped out the op-amp for the stereo RCA with the Burson V7 Vivid op-amp. The 12au7 tubes have less gain output than the 12ax7 tubes. The 12ax7 will give your audio signature more weight. The Burson V7 Vivid op-amp will add even more weight to the audio. Over the standard op-amps, the Burson V7 Vivid op-amp will provide better sonics, imaging, and a better soundstage experience. Depending on synergy with your system, and sound refinements your looking for you may want to use the Burson V7 Classic op-amp for a more warmer tone. I like the 12au7 tubes paired with the V7 Vivid op-amp due to a more neutral audio experience, and the synergistic effects with my audio rig. The Burson V7 Vivid op-amp was an additional $89, and the PSVane Horizon 12au7 tubes (matched pair) was an additional $59. So, the Aiyima is approx $169 on Amazon + approx $150 in upgrades on Amazon = approx $320 total - Is it worth it. To me ABSOLUTELY! P.S. The cost of the op-amp doubles if wanting to use for the balanced output since you will need to have a pair for the balanced outs, but only one is needed for the single ended outputs. If you want to swap out all 3 op-amps than that will be approx $270 just for the op-amp upgrades. You could also swap out the op-amps with the Sparkos SS3602 for about the same price as a Burson V7 Vivid op-amp. The Sparkos SS3602 is said to be the more neutral op-amp between that of the Burson V7 series op-amps. However, I use both brands, and models in my audio rig (4 Sparkos SS3602/3 Burson V7 Vivid). This combination works great for me in my audio rig. I have devices using the Sparkos op-amps (since they are the more neutral op-amp) feeding into other devices with the Burson op-amps. The Burson V7 Vivid have a more " V " shape sound signature, and the Burson V7 Classics have a more " U " shape sound signature. For me using both brands/models of op-amps chained in sequence the way I have it setup in my rig, I am getting the best of both worlds for an incredible sound signature from these op-amps.

Hi Nick, very fine honest video. Love to learn your opinion about the differences between the T20 and the already hyped Fosi ZP3 preamp. Also love to hear in the reactions whitch tubes and/ or opamps are best suited for these stunning affordable preamps (hope in the very near future brands like Fosi, Douk, Aiyima are going to offer a choice between several opamps and tubes standard factory fitted: as manufacturer large savings are a benefit for the potential buyers and is saves the hustle of opening the cases - somethimes vers difficult - f.i. Fosi ZP3)! Keep on the good works!

I dropped the T20 into my existing system and it curved the highs and warmed a bit of crispness off the pings and chimes. It felt a bit hollowed out. Where i found it shined most was on acoustic songs with great vocals. It provided a bit more depth on vocals and strings. I'll probably do all the upgrades too it since I hear that can help with it's short comings. Plus I find it enjoyable to do.

Thanks for the review. I bought one, bought a LPS on Ali and changed the tubes with PSVANE 12AX7-S : massive improvements in soundstage . Then I changed the OP with AkLIAM AK05, then I reached heaven. I tried the OP 828 but the AK05 are better. More punch and soundstage.
However I can say that as tube preamp, I still prefer the sound of my Little Dot MKIII with RTC 5654 tubes. I’m going to try other OPA and OU902MK9 OP upgraders. We’ll see

It takes some experimentation and pairing, but some have done some fairly comprehensive forum reviews of the t20 swapping opamps and tubes, to the point that they now like it better than a Freya. Crazy to me that could be possible. I’d really like one just to see, or have something that might pleasingly counter my SPL pre.

Hey thank you for the video! Before I get too far into the video I wanted to comment and say that you finally replaced that 9 V battery that was in your smoke detector, lol!! That thing was chirping every 30 seconds in the last video I watched about the GR70 headphone/preamp.

Hopefully this gets a few laughs, thank you for the video, appreciate it.

Amazing preamp..
After using it for 3 months , I upgrade to LPS , even with stock tubes & opamps , improve dynamics , more 3d sound & separations..
Next upgrade would be the tubes..
Then maybe the opamps..

In my fairly revealing system — Eversolo T8 streamer, Schiit Mimir DAC, Parasound A23+ amplifier, Magnepan LRS+ speakers, and a REL subwoofer — the Aiyima T20 made very little meaningful impact. I was hoping for a bit of tube warmth and body, but what I heard was essentially no change in tonal character. While it functions adequately as a basic preamp, it comes across more as a budget hybrid with tubes for appearance rather than delivering any real tube-driven sonic character. The T20 is built around small 6N3 tubes operating at relatively low plate voltage, with an op-amp handling the output stage. In practice, this means the tubes aren’t being driven hard enough to generate the harmonic richness and dimensionality many listeners associate with true tube gear. Most of the gain and buffering is handled by solid-state circuitry, so the unit behaves more like a mild tone buffer than a genuine tube preamp. In a resolving system, the result is subtle at best — a slight softening of edges, a touch of gain, and little else in terms of added body or texture.

Hi Nick.. thanks for this video.. Just a question.. You say that the triggers are in/out. I bought a T20 and tried both triggers (AMP and DAC) and experience that both are out.. No IN triggers...
Have you tried them? thanks

I have to wonder if your short changing the T20. Listening to other reviews upgrading the tubes and op amps and even the power supply takes it another level. Although it adds to the cost unfortunately.
