@15:07 There's your first problem, The Catholics bought out our watering hole (Seaview) and turned it into a refuse base as you can see. @17:35 the second issue, the wealthy folk re-realised Sandgate and bought out a lot of the area, overpricing the village.
The Post Office was converted into a 'hotel' (PUB) 2009-2010, John and Lisa had a good gig going on there for a while but then it just went down after that. buyer after lessee, after buyer and lessee again, then it shut for about a year (almost two), from there it is now (after your show and standing vacant) became an american interest - Bubba Gumps - Yes, correct, no-one can believe the mess either. But thats is ok, we predict it will close not long after the hype is over and return it to the people of Sandgate village.

My daughter's father Terence was born on the 150th anniversary of the laying of the Sandgate Town hall., and lived in Sandgate area throughout his childhood.  It is the 150th anniversary of the Ekka this year , btw. My daughter was there and had the exact same experience with the strawberry sundae as was shown in your Ekka Walkabout blog . Her friend Jas also lost her strawberry 🍓  in the same way.  You are a treasure,  Rob .😊

Memories!

My family is from around the area. My father used to say that area you didn't know what it was at 17:12 used to be sectioned off for swimming. The post office is now a Bubba Gump restaurant, that's why it was closed when you visited.  The Sandgate baptist Church was also in a commercial for used cars. I think it was zupps 🤔
Both my father & grandfather used to work at the gasworks.

4017 for life . I grew up in the Brighton hotel from 1979 to 89 my family ran the pub
, went to st keriens brighton 81/82/83/84 to st pats 85/86/87 then Sandgate high   88/89/90.  love that area miss it so much

My family and I arrived as 10 pound Poms in January 1971. I found a job at Hamilton and we then found a rental on Flinders Parade for $25 week. Typical highset wood 3 bedrooms looking out over the old swimming pool. Today, I couldn't afford to buy a house along that Parade let alone rent one! I don't think we fully appreciated what we had back in the day. A house looking out to the Pacific Ocean. Our 3 kids loved it there and all attended the local schools. Fond memories of both Sandgate and Shorncliffe. Thank you Rob for the nostalgia trip.

I was just scrolling through   Utube when I came across this video. I thought this will probably be crap, but I was wrong. It was very good and a credit to the work. Well done mate. I'm Glas I gave it a look.

Lived at 16 Loudon Street from1956-1970.  The houses have changed a lot since then.  Loved growing up here.  Two doors up the street from the Kelly Clan (KSK Press).  Still keep in touch with my boyhood friend of 70 years Kerry.  Shorncliffe Primary School was fantastic.  We lived on fish and crabs for most of my youth, but also ate thousands of lollies from Biddles , across the street from the Town Hall at the bottom of Loudon Street.  In the 50's we had bread delivered by horse drawn cart.  Milk was delivered.  We had an outhouse.  Sports were simple in those days, The Sandgate Hawks and every kind of sport at Sandgate High.  Lived in the USA for 50 years and I miss Sandgate every day.

No mention of the Musgrave hotel formerly located on the cnr of Yundah & Pier Ave/Kate St. The hitching post for horses is still there.
