Well, I didn't know either one of them personally, but all I've ever heard from his former players and anyone else who knew him is that Wooden was a good man, a kind man, a man of principle and compassion.
I had a drink with coach Don Haskins several years ago and he said that Bobby Knight had more integrity than anyone he had ever known. For a man who grew up in El Paso that is like words from up on high!!
A good guy to ask is Marcus Johnson about Gilbert. Also Knight thought Pete Newell of Cal was a better coach than Wooden. That was Knights go to mentor.
Wooden didn’t know how to deal with those distractions like Sam Gilbert; he controlled the b-ball environment. The one who should have said something was the UCLA Athletic Director. This is also Knight playing small ball here.
He is correct on this, Sam Gilbert made UCLA basketball by doing some really underhanded things. No one had even close to the player funnel that UCAL had in those years.
Ill sum it up this way all big time colleges cheated or manipulated the rules. UCLA took it to another level after Bill Walton said that he never paid for anything at UCLA!!!!! Alot of people dont realize that Wooden was there for 14 yrs before he started winning and it aligns wih Gilberts influence. But when Walton said that the players couldnt wait to get to practice that took Wooden to another level most athletes hate practice got to respect that.
As a teenager, my dad sent me to John Wooden's camp in the late 70s and early 80s at Cal Lutheran after he retired. We would stay there 5 days and we dormed with the Dallas Cowboys.
The first 3 days of camp we never saw a basketball. Everything was drills for hours. At 5'7", I remember learning how to box out on rebounds and couldn't wait to apply it in the games.
Maybe Wooden got favorable recruits, but I can tell you just as a teenager being around his camps that you learn every fundamental and what it means to hustle.
You don't win 7 national championships in a row in any sport without being exceptional at what you do by repetitive practice and dedication. And in order to get the entire team to buy in, each player has to respect and love their coach.
Wooden knew both the physical and psychological means to get a player to perform at their best.
The one thing I respect about both Knight and Wooden is their common denominator, they both showed no favoritism, you were going to work your ass off and be a team player or you're out.
Bob Knight is 100% accurate in his comments about the John Wooden era at UCLA. I lived in SoCal during the 60’s and 70’s and worked in the USC athletic department during the 70’s and beyond. I watched all UCLA men’s basketball games that were televised and announced on TV by Dick Enberg. It was a well known fact that Sam Gilbert was the money guy behind UCLA recruiting. Wooden was a great basketball coach but he turned a blind eye to the players that Gilbert was taking care of. The NCAA did nothing because Wooden was considered untouchable.
