Birds (even birds of prey) can't fly as fast as your drone when going up. So when you suspect an attack, never try to escape going down, but just climb vertically as fast as you can instead

@RuneWold 1 year ago

Great tip. One good tip if you have birds attacking your drone is to try and go up as the drone will rise faster than the bird and it may save you if the bird is really agressive.

My son is a missionary in Uganda Africa. I took my drone over there and could not believe how the birds would attack it! Never had a single attack in the US. I would watch closely and the birds would circle the drone positioning themselves at the drones flight level and then come in for the attack. However as they got into position I would raise or lower it to make them circle and regain their attack position, then I would move the drone again. The birds get bored and leave when they cannot make a hit! Amazing how the African birds are so aggressive!

I have the master air screw propellers for my Mini 4 pro. They are great as far as cutting down noise and performance, but the thing I found most useful was to put yellow ones on the back and black, blue or red ones on the front so you can always tell which way your drone is facing.

@AlwayslookingNeverlookedfor 1 year ago

I put googlie eyes on mine and they think it's a big bird of prey.

In my 6 years flying drones, I've lost 2 drones to birds. 1) Phantom 4 over the sea at sunset. Seagull hits drone, puff of feathers and both fall into sea. 2) FPV flying between buildings, flock of pigeons came through gap between buildings. Drone is down AND catches fire. All my drones have reflective tape and Googly Eyes 😆

@robreyescosme6902 1 year ago (edited)

I have both the reflective red tape and the strobe light on my drone. My drone has never been attacked by birds during the 2 years of flying it. I have flown both the coastal waters and inland as well.

@bobdickie4896 1 year ago

I’ve heard if birds are threatening, flying straight up quickly communicates to the assailants dominance. Descending communicates submission and encourages the threat. FWIW

@cliffleigh7450 1 year ago (edited)

Red reflective tape works for most birds including crows but not Magpies. Even after I landed 3 magpies came and perched over me till I left. But you have to be careful not to cover the GPS sensors as it is metallic. Also I tried Yellow Master Airscrew props which worked well until they got out of shape from being clipped down - then I started getting payload errors. So I ended up reluctantly reverting to the DJI props which solved that problem.

@grenaldalves 10 months ago

the crows are nuts. i learnt a crow call and have quite a loud booming voice you should see them scatter when they hear this big fat crow lol

@richardlewis5483 1 year ago

Should have checked this first,made my maidem flight with my mini3 4k in the Savannah and was attacked by birds ,switch to sport to try and evade them but ended up crashing into a tree. Smh.

Dude - your advice helped me so much - then I lost the flashing light, and the next flight (before I had chance to replace the light) I was attacked by magpies and the drone was destroyed. I'm also in Melbourne. Now I've got a new Mavic 4 Pro - and going to apply all your advice - thanks so much!

I love how you got to the point within the first minute of the video I like that

@kkuni491 1 year ago

I was surprised at how simple and effective it was to avoid bird attacks with just one piece of reflective tape.
I often film with a drone, and I remember being attacked by a crow (a type of bird) while flying my drone, and it was so scary.
If I had known about this video back then, I would have been much less surprised.
Thanks to this, I think I can film more safely in the future. Thank you!:face-red-heart-shape::face-red-heart-shape::face-red-heart-shape:

Great! Look to be simple, practical solutions to what can be a problem. When I was flying my Mavic Mini 2, years ago before it finally got too broken, at the beginning, aggressive looking birds were getting too close. I put stickers on that looked like eyes and after that, there wasn't an issue, though perhaps didn't fly it often enough in bird heavy areas to be certain about its effectiveness. When I get another drone (I'm waiting for the Avata 3), I'll first try your methods. Also, I like the look myself, with the reflective tape and the strobe. A lot of crows here. Wait.. don't magpies, a kind of crow, like reflective things?

@garyguest1999 1 year ago

Reflective tape, Didn’t work for me. Twice of late I have had birds attack my drone. Once I came back to land and after power off noticed half of one prop was missing. However when flying with strobes I have had no problems. I have strobes on the top and bottom of my Mavic 3.

@darksteve84 1 year ago

I live and fly in the outback, i run a strobe and fly higher than the birds. Been attacked by a bird once and it was my fault for flying near its tree

@cameraobscuraf64 6 months ago

Here in the coastal California region the Red Tail Hawk can be aggressive toward drones. Harbor Gulls are the worse, they'll try to eat anything.

@graphguy 1 year ago

I have an all natural method.
I strap one of my cats onto the back of my drone, it works great!
The only problem is then I am in violation of exceeding the 250g limit.
