A fascinating selection from our December 2026 Specialist Guitar Auction, ranging from rare vintage resonators and acoustics to one of the most significant guitars in the sale: Johnny Marr’s 1988 Fender American Vintage ’62 Reissue Stratocaster.
We begin with a fantastic selection of acoustic and resonator guitars, including a 2001 Gibson Custom Shop J-200 Elite, a 1928 National Style 2 Tricone, a 1934 National Style 0, a c.1971 Dobro Lily, a 1960s Del Vecchio and a Royall 12-string Tricone.
We also take a look at a 1955 Gretsch 6021 Town & Country and two interesting Fender instruments, before arriving at Johnny Marr’s 1988 Fender American Vintage ’62 Reissue Stratocaster in Olympic White.
Formerly owned by Marr, the Stratocaster was his principal stage guitar during his period with The The and was used throughout the band’s 1989–90 The The Versus the World world tour. The guitar features EMG pickups fitted by Marr’s technician Phil Powell, along with the distinctive oversized brass volume knob associated with Marr’s Stratocasters.
The guitar is accompanied by an extensive collection of supporting provenance, including photographs, tour material, magazine references, Marr’s personal thumb pick and custom Ernie Ball ‘Johnny’ plectrum, a handwritten case tag reading ‘Blonde Strat EMG Pickups’, and a provenance postcard signed by Johnny Marr. The instrument was purchased directly from Marr by the present vendor.
We also demonstrate the Johnny Marr Stratocaster before taking a look at the Mesa Boogie live rack rig associated with his The The period.
The significance of Marr’s Stratocasters from this period was further highlighted by the recent Marr’s Guitars: The Johnny Marr Collection auction at Christie’s, London, where a different 1987 Fender American Standard Stratocaster associated with his early years with The The sold for £38,400.
