Chest trauma is one the hallmark traumatic emergencies we see as EMTs and Paramedics in the ambulance service. There are numerous critical organs and vessels in the chest including the heart, lungs, and great vessels. The great vessels carry a large amount of blood supply and if injured due to chest trauma can result in major bleeding these are: The aorta, superior vena cava, inferior vena cava, pulmonary arteries, pulmonary veins.

We also are concerned about rib fractures (broken ribs) clavicle fractures and with a high enough mechanism of action even a fractured sternum. We will discuss both closed and open chest injuries that you will encounter as an EMS professional. I hope this 30 minute lesson allows you to nail your trauma quiz in EMT/Paramedic class!

Be great,
