On 13th June 1944, German infantry and armour launched a ferocious counterattack against American paratroopers on the outskirts of Carentan, Normandy. This video reconstructs the Battle of Bloody Gulch using eyewitness accounts, wartime records and original 1944 aerial photography to reveal what really happened, field by field.

Band of Brothers made Easy Company's stand at Carentan famous, but the true story is far more complex. When the German attack came, Easy Company wasn't even in the front line. It was Dog and Fox Companies of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment who bore the initial assault, fighting and dying for hours before the line came close to collapse entirely.

Using Lt Ronald Speirs' original battle map overlaid onto historic reconnaissance photography, this video pinpoints the actual location of the fighting, correcting decades of misidentification, including on Google Earth, and traces the chaotic withdrawal of F Company, the isolation of Speirs' platoon at an exposed farmhouse, and the desperate defence that held the American line until 2nd Armored Division tanks arrived to turn the tide.

Beyond the famous television dramatisation lies a battle involving far more men than a single company: paratroopers from the 501st and 502nd, tank crews, mortar teams and medics, all fighting to prevent a German breakthrough that could have unravelled the entire Normandy campaign. Understanding what actually happened at Bloody Gulch restores a fuller, more accurate picture of one of the 101st Airborne Division's hardest-fought engagements, and honours the men whose contribution has often been overshadowed by a more famous few.
