What happens when you force an electron into a proton? Not what you'd expect. The electron doesn't just merge with the proton, it transforms it. Through the weak nuclear force, the proton changes identity entirely, becoming a neutron while releasing a ghostly neutrino that can pass through an entire planet without touching a single atom.

This process, called electron capture, is one of the most fundamental transformations in particle physics. Under normal conditions, it barely happens. But inside the collapsing core of a dying massive star, where densities reach beyond nuclear levels, it becomes unstoppable. Trillions upon trillions of protons are converted into neutrons in less than a second, releasing a flood of neutrinos carrying more energy than hundreds of suns will produce in their entire lifetimes.

In this video, we explore the weak interaction at the quark level, electron degeneracy pressure and the Chandrasekhar limit, the runaway collapse of an iron core, the historic detection of neutrinos from Supernova 1987A, and the bizarre internal structure of neutron stars, from nuclear pasta to neutron superfluids.
