The only difference between new money and old money that I've noticed is that old money stays quiet. You'll struggle to find anything about their family and personal life and that's how they like it.

I’m Nigerian-American and I go back and forth, but it’s always hilarious when people move to Nigeria cosplaying old money. Like babe, the real legacy people I know don’t even act like that. Nigeria is mad classist already, you don’t have to perform.

There are so many factors to take into consideration when judging Old vs. New money. The country they come from can have a huge impact, also- as you pointed out- what industry they are in can be a factor too. I have met old and new money in various countries and they all have good and bad. However in my personal experience, the old money families tended to treat me a lot better or seem more comfortable with me (the nanny) vs how the new money treated me more like "the help".

The “humble brag” is so real, lol. I find it funny that people think that old money is not flashy, when they are simply flashy in other ways that aren’t material.
For instance, in my family, it’s the most egregious transgression to brag about what you physically have. However, it is acceptable to brag about what you know or experience.
It’s offensive to brag about “Look at me! Look at me and my car! Look at me and my bag!”. But no one would correct you if you said “Oh.., I know because I’ve been going there since I was a child.” Or “Oh. Of course, I learned that when I studied at Cambridge”.
Old money children can be more pretentious and more snobby than new money children can even imagine (I would know, I am the snob I’m talking about).

Personally, I was blessed enough to be around both old money, new money and no money kids)). For a while of close relationships with all 3, I would note one trait that is so unique and naturally beatuful, that I belive every parent/future parent should teach their children. That is Decency. Its not about fake smiles, compliments or "kindness". Decency is an empathyc way of respecting everyone there is.

Albina raised an excellent example about utensils. Truly, we often are introduced to a new experiences. Yet, if you cant trust a simple question to your nearest circle how can you build a relationship that is long-term ?. This people that will criticese you or try to move away from you - would be the strongest indicator of not being worthy of anything. Even basic values. Here, decency is a true metric. Build it within yourslef. Be nobel and humble. Humble not a sence of acting poor when you are rich, but rather humble in a sence of understanding and not criticizing.

I would like to add an example to the Albina's one : You go to an event with, so call it "rich kids", doesnt matter if you are rich, poor, you naturaly start a conversation and everything goes smooth, but pretty quickly you witness that when you stop talking, conversation dies and everyone is dead silent. It creates an aura where one feels that the words that come out of your mouth cost money, and whoever speaks less is "more statused" or priveleged... This is such a sign of fake money)) as Albina mentioned in her video if you know, you know...

Another example : Once I had a dinner with my old money friends. It was in a nice place, with nice music and food. My friends were also nice and kind, but there would always be that one guy who would be so kind to you, you feel that you dont deserve it. He/She would never be kind to the extent of you assuming that he/she is pretty-faced or bootlicker, but quite opposite, you feel that the person is higly wholesome and a true definition of inherited good manners and decency. This is what I call old money. Old money is not "old money", its an accumulation of incredable manners and respect, that you pass along and make people feel worthy. This way people will be around you more often.

people from generational wealth are either embarrassed about being handed everything or they are proud of it. It really aligns with their politics. If they are embarrassed they are more liberal, if they're proud of generational wealth they're conservative.

Warren Buffet is also old money.  He comes from a wealthy family.  His father was a senator.

Oh no, they've discovered me! To be fair, I started to dress old money even before it became a trend. When I discovered old money fashion, I already mastered watching Gentleman's gazette youtube channel.

Before 'Old Money' became a fashion trend, in the UK  at least, Old Money was not a fashion trend, it was people that dressed and looked like Granville from the TV show 'Open All Hours'. and they live in the non city areas inbetween cities and large towns that their ancestors have owned since 1066. These days, they are not filthy rich either, they make revenue from the land they own (rent it out to farmers, camp sites, other small businesses) and make a nice comfortable living that way. That is one of the reasons why they look traditional, is because its not just generational wealth, its generational clothing. They are literally wearing their grandfparents clothes and wear their watches, drive their cars because back in the 50s, 60s these families could afford the best Saville Row tailoring, Crockett&Jones shoes, buy nice Rolex, Cartier, Petek watches and Drive Jags, Rolls and Bentley. Now they really can't afford such lavishness now

Why not spend just a snippet and tailor the clothes to fit, get the Rolex serviced and the Bentley repaired to a usable state than spend a fortune they don't really have on getting these item new (New Bentley costing £200k for a base model)

The film "The Gentleman" Matthew McConaughey's character said it perfectly about the old money gentry. "They got lots of land and f**k all dough".

But as a fashion trend, I like it. Its nice to see people dress classically well no matter their background. Is it cosplay? Yes, because 'Old Money" families are incredibly rare compared to the rest of the population.

I always believed that old money was considered more respectable was because it has been quite a long time since they gained status so the awe "marinated" them, if you get me? And also because I think we associate people from the past eras as more elegant and refined. But when people say "new money" they think of people around their own age group, building jealousy, and also I think a lot of people misunderstand "new money" as "poor people faking wealth" - showing off a lot, being very loud and flashy, attention seeking behaviours, etc. At least that's what I believed all this time. Opinions?
