Judy Garland's childhood was far darker than the girl in the ruby slippers ever let on. Before she was ten, the pills had already started, and the first person to hand them to her wasn't anyone at MGM.

In this video, we trace the story from a small movie theater in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, to the MGM lot, where Louis B. Mayer's studio controlled what she ate, when she slept, and how long she worked. Garland described pep pills, sleeping pills, and just four hours of rest between shifts, while co-star Mickey Rooney insisted it never happened. Drawing on Gerald Clarke's biography "Get Happy," Judy's own unfinished memoir, and her interviews, we look at what really happened to Dorothy, and how the habits of her childhood followed her all the way to London in 1969.
