Nice video. I did the Taylor knock out numbers on your data and came up with:

10mm 13.13
45acp 13.78
Remington load 14.22
Dragoon load 16.36

All hail black powder. We exterminated bears and all the buffalo with black powder.

You are a realist. My alaskan friends used 44, 45 for bear defence. 06 for camp attacks too. 45-70 was popular too. At 70 we stay warm lately! The mouth shot saved my great aunts family with a 45lc peacemaker. Saved their flank o bacon too. The door was busted off. Aunt went sprawling. She shivered as she told the story!

You are my kind of guy. You think for yourself and back it up. I really get a lot out of your videos and learn a lot. Your living a dream I once had long long ago. At 75 my day is nearly done. Its great seeing you live it. You are flat authentic and a no BS man. I got no time for fools. Carry on!

Those large diameter bullets with a wide meplat, hit VERY hard and really penetrate while cutting a full caliber wound channel. That 3rd model dragoon repro ain't no joke. That is some serious power!! On the other hand....I have Grizzly .45acp+p 185 JHP that averages 1362 fps and 763 fpe from a 6" barrel. With the right ammo, the old .45acp is a hellava cartridge!

You had me in stitches sir.  I agree with your conclusions and thank you for taking the time to put together this video.  Good journey

As a shooter of old school firearms and modern firearms, this video producer is 100% spot on.  Anyone that says otherwise, does not know their shit.

Lol in there SpongeBob pajamas 🤣

Excellent presentation. People tend to equate: Obsolete = Ineffective. Not TRU ha. The modern synthetic muzzleloading propellants are extremely energetic and will sit in chamber for several months without meaningful degradation to combustion. I am currently one of these "prohibited persons" and daily carry a Ruger Old Army or my go-to Colt 3rd gen 1860. They are both superbly accurate and reliable for what they are. I enjoyed these tests and your commentary from an experienced outdoorsman should convert a few armchair commandos if they aren't too wrapped up in their egotistical superiority.

You got a thumbs up. It was the rant that did it. Hell yeah I agree with you 100%

Men back in the 1860s lived in the same area that you do using the antiquated technology and living meaningful lives. I agree with you 100% a well adapted, smart man that knows the shit he needs to know to live in those areas all year round are some of the best men in the worldI commend you, my friend going out with a bow and a hawk that’s pretty manly. God bless you, good, sir.

Poke on and keep doing what you do!  I very much enjoyed this video!  Thanks for the Kaido Ojamaa link as I was about to buy his 220 grain mold for my .44 replica 51 navy, 60 army colts and my 58 Remington when cancer hit in April of 2025. The good news is I learned at a young age how to hit back harder!  The bad news is is I now need to find a 3rg gen Dragoon!! Not so bad at all to be on the right side of six feet!  Live, love, and prosper!

Wow i've always loved the dragoon, as you know, but maybe I love it a little more now

Great video I like the cap and ball shooting the most that was cool

I really appreciate the attention to detail on the 1911 and black powder loads because it opens up the discussion about pistols that people are willing or able to carry consistently.

Most channels focus on hydrostatic shock from fast, high caliber, flat nosed, hard cast pistol ammunition between 10mm and 454 Casull.

As we've seen here, it doesn't take a cannon to penetrate through a dozen gallon jugs, or more.

It's arguable that shot placement is more important than brute force. If you don't know why Bella Twin is famous, you might want to research that.

Having said all that, a 10mm is on the high end of what I would want to EDC if I lived somewhere that aggresive bears like to roam. As much fun as the bigger revolvers are, very few people could get off more than one shot at a charging bear 30 yards away (and I am not one of them). At least i might get a chance at 1 or 2 follow up shots with a 10mm or a 45acp 1911.

I'm not judging guys who like to carry BFRs like the .500 Bushwhacker. You do you. But if I'm out in an area with bears or moose, I'd prefer to rely on a hunting rifle or a shotgun with Brenneke Black Magic slugs. That way I have overwhelming force inside 100 yards, and a semi-auto pistol for backup if old Smokie got the jump on me.

So again, I appreciate this channel for covering options for people who can't carry production firearms and for those who just enjoy historic pistols.

The black powder 45 colt round was designed to stop a horse , a 44 black powder revolver with a proper conical bullet is just as lethal. ❤

Wow!  Thank you for posting unabashed facts in a world full of BS these days!  Very refreshing, and expertly done!  Kaiso is the Man! I have spoken with him as well, awesome dude, excellent molds, he has!  Thanks again!

Fascinating! Decades ago I loaded my Ruger 45 Old Army with as much BP as possible and round balls. My Friend had a 44 mag Desert Eagle and regular 240 hollow points. Weird thing is the Ruger penetrated way deeper shot into a stack of 4x4's. Went through Three 4x4's as I recall. The 44 mag barely made it through one. Seemed like the 44 mag tore itself apart and could not penetrate.  Next we shot at some 55 gal steel drums. The 44 made neat 44 cal holes like a paper punch. The Old Army ripped holes through about an inch and 1/4 diameter, with the steel rolled inward like a crater. It looked like the BP weapon was way more destructive. On other targets the 44 would shine of course. Still impressed with old school BP.

Excellent video, superb demonstration! Thank you for demonstrating the REALITY of what a properly loaded C&B revolver can do. I've ceased telling the chrono readings I've actually gotten from .36 Navy revolvers because no one will believe them. In my Uberti 1851 Navy, 25 grs of Swiss FFFg under an 82 gr 0.380 round ball, consistently hits about 1250 fps! Under a 140 gr conical I use Swiss 4Fg (18 grs) and consistently get 950 fps, very similar to a 9mm 147 gr! At 1250 fps a soft alloy .380 round ball delivers a very destructive strike on a "2-legged threat" inside of a range of 20 yards, and the 140 gr conical will punch very deep at 950 fps, with excellent accuracy to 100 yards!  Like you I've gotten quite tired of hearing "experts" who have never fired a C&B revolver tell me a .36 Navy is "hits about like a .380 ACP".  Under a round ball, I prefer to use 3Fg, as a healthy full chamber charge is pretty heavy!  However under a conical, where chamber capacity is limited by the bullet length, I'll use faster-combusting 4Fg!  Thanks again for all your work in putting up such excellent videos that educate so well!  Best wishes!

Appreciate this video on the bp, love regular guns but air and bp are ironically the future IMHO

Great video.  When I bought my 1860 a few years ago I did a lot of testing and figure it was pretty close to a 45ACP. This is my first video of yours and it got you a subscribe from me.
