With the night owl part, I saw another autistic creator say that it makes sense that they prefer the night, because usually there are less expectations of what you are supposed to do with your time, as well as there is far less stimulation typically. It's dark out, and people are asleep. It all resonated with me pretty well. There's a sort of freedom of the night that I've always liked.

I was diagnosed in 1st grade and I still had to do the whole "am I stimming because I want to stim or because I'm pretending to be autistic" thingy. Not as a kid, of course, just as I became more aware of autism and started caring. And now I'm pretty authentic!
(Also, I'm amazed I was diagnosed as a kid on account of being a woman.)

Omg everything that you said about the Imposter syndrome when you first realised you were autistic is so helpful. I'm currently getting tested and very anxious about it. I didn't think anyone else felt like that. Theres no one in real life that understands that kind of stuff. The community here has given me so much knowledge and unconscious support. Wether I am autistic or not, I just wanted to thank you all for making me feel less lonely.

"Stop Stimming" also so very me. Every. Single. Day. I have to forcibly remind myself that my current "post diagnosis" stims are the same ones I did when I was 2, and 12, and 22, and 42 and have not changed just because I'm now aware of being autistic and stimming.

I like crocs as a house shoe because 1. No crumbs on feet 2. Can modify warmth by the thickness of the sock
3. Non clunky, quiet steps

Neat organization is a significant part of my childhood autistic trauma. Parents would "clean" and I would be upset because I remembered where I put the thing and now the thing is no longer where I put the thing but in some other foreign arbitrary location

16:10 This is why that "i'm silly!"/"but I stay silly"/"I can act rather silly at times" cat meme has become a genuine, healthy coping mechanism for me. The things that bother my self-esteem are NOT the kind of things that can be spun as "good", but both my bad and good nd traits can very much be spun as silly!!! And, it's much more lighthearted than other neutral self-talk, which I find can come across as dehumanizing and disconnected from "me"

I had my autism assessment yesterday and they asked if I could read facial expressions and body language. We had just talked about whether I was gullible and had been taken advantage of because of it. I suddenly realised that I think I can understand facial expressions but I cant tell if it is genuine or someone is lying or being manipulative. Huge realisation!

In my experience, it isn't that us autistic people don't notice differences in facial or bolidy language. We're super observant of our environment because we have to be constantly aware of any stressors or potential sensory issues. Trust me, we notice that change in expression, that change on body language, that change of tone. We're keenly aware of it, we just have no idea what it means because it's not the same as how we do it. That's how some autistic people can appear to have no social problems. We eventually learn how people we know express emotions, but it's very case specific knowledge, not universal

Super grateful to have found you and the autism community recently. Everything makes more sense now. I finally feel like people understand me instead of being this broken alien that's struggling to make it in the world. Granted, it still feels pretty impossible to function in this world, but at least I'm no longer alone. This world is so overwhelming and exhausting, and it's so difficult when no one around you understands and just tells you to stop being ridiculous/dramatic, try harder, and power through.

Oh my goodness - that whole conversation with family members where they insist you aren't Autistic because "they do that too - everyone does - that's normal".....No.....you do that and half our family does it, because Autisim has a strong genetic component!

My phone stays off and on the shelf in a thick case unless I am expecting a call or going to make one...I really hate those things...I hope I am not alone in this...I am also 58 years old so maybe that has a little to do with it...yes I am autistic and adhd as well.

6-7 energy burst. Its so nice when the only thing left to do is spend time until bed time. No worrying about hygiene or food. Just interests until its time to do it again tomorrow

Crocs rating : 9/10

I have size 13 feet, so finding comfy slippers is not an option. I wear crocs at home when the floor here in Canada is freezing cold because I hate walking in socks 🤷‍♂️

Also, it prevents me from feeling every single bit of dirt that's on the floor driving me mad

I remember one teacher who came to me after I had a panic attack in class / meltdown. He kneeled down, waited for me to calm down and then handed me a piece of paper with a phone number and said: „I don’t know if you have been tested for ADHD yet, but I see that you’re struggling. This is the number of a psychiatrist. You can call them and make an appointment for an assessment.“
At the time, I thought that seeing a psychiatrist meant that I was an insane person, so I put the phone number into a box and eventually discarded it without telling anyone.

Now me and my sister got diagnosed with adhd in our late twenties and all because I remembered what that teacher said to me. And now I am on a waiting list for an asd assessment.

Teachers who go above and beyond for their pupils save lives. That teacher is my hero!
