I could not believe Merle said in the interview the greatest award he achieved in life was the pardon he received from Governor Regean. I was not expecting that with all the achievements he had being a star of country music
I got to see The Hag in the 90s and what an experience. The man came out, hooked up his guitar and sang. No fireworks, no dancing around, just one great song after another. Songs he had sung many times but he sang each song honestly and from the heart. One of those concerts that you don't forget. RIP Hag and thanks for all the great music you did and left for us to remember you by...
Merle wrote so many great songs, he’s always going to be remembered as one of the greatest but he also had a voice to match. Only Hank Williams and Merle were blessed with both.
Here in what they call modern times, I catch myself saying, they’re all gone, I also ride my motorcycle around and say it’s all gone too, there’s no more old house and barns. It’s all changed, don’t think it’s for the good either.
Man I loved him! He said he didn't feel like he had written that song that would last forever...God love him, he wrote several of those songs....Okie from Muskogee, Mama Tried, Silver wings, Are the good times really over for good, I think I'll just sit here and drink(a personal favorite ;)] Today I started loving you again, Pancho and Lefty...maybe he didn't write some of these, but he damned sure sang them with heart! I loved him...yeah, I know, I said that before...lol
Him and Marty Robbins have always been my favorites. Even Marty thought Merle waa better, and I still think Marty was absolutely amazing. Imagine all these folks today not knowing the greatest country music singer, who could do just about anything and did it his own way was a born and bred Californian. ❤ Every time somebody tries to talk a little smack about my home state, I remind them that California is the home of the Bakersfield sound and original outlaw country.
I got to see Merl in Knoxville at the Tennessee Theater in the late 70’s. After his performance he invited all of us out back to his bus. He sat on the step and took time with everyone he did not rush anyone. I thanked him for his song Big City Turn me loose and set me free. I worked 5 years in a GM Auto plant. The song inspired me to move to Tennessee. He was genuinely glad to have a part in my decision to move my family to Tennessee. We had a great life there. I had a WIVK T-shirt on that night and I asked him for an autograph, he said he would be glad to sign it if I promised to walk in the radio station with it on and let them know how much I enjoyed the concert. I did wear it in and let the radio personalities see me with it on. Bonnie Owens was across the street and I got to speak briefly with her. A great time.
