does the gear go through something at the mast or is it attached to the yard? so when you lower the yard, does the top of the gear come with that? (so you need to haul in the gear while lowering) or does it stay at the mast? (so you need to slacken the gear when lowering)

This guy is so nice. James Craig must be a friendly ship. I've been reading clipper ship lore for the past four years. The sailing masters in the old day were not quite so nice... or helpful.
