Ghana's new Road Traffic Regulations L.I. 2519 are in force right now.
And most Ghanaians have no idea what's inside them.
Cameras go live on November 1st
through a platform called Traffitech. The era of "giving something small" to an officer might be over. Because cameras don't take bribes.
Here's what the law actually says:
Jumping a red light, up to 30 days in prison. Using your phone while driving up to 3 months.
Drunk driving up to 40 months. Hawking on a moving trotro
up to 8 months.
Preaching on a moving trotro up to 8 months. Parking in a disability space, up to 8 months.
Riding without a helmet up to 3 months. Jaywalking up to 7 days.
Washing your car on the road, up to 30 days. Driving with tinted front windscreen, up to 3 months.
And if cameras catch you 6 times
within 24 months, your licence
is gone. Minimum 12 months.
Plus retraining. Plus retesting.
In this Tell It Straight episode —
shot outside on Ghana's streets —
I broke down every offence that
Ghanaians and the diaspora flying home
for December actually need to know.
Some of these things we do every day
without thinking.
Starting November 1st Traffitech
is thinking for us.
This is Tell It Straight.
Shot on location. In Accra. On the streets.
