I also wonder about the encore. Being older I was of the opinion that an artist/group began giving encores as a thank you to and in acknowledgment of their audience for the audience’s reaction to the show.

I think the tradition of/point of the encore has been lost on younger generations.

Instead of cancelling the encore I would prefer to see artists give encores only when they feel moved to do so.

I went to a Foo Fighters concert (my first but not going to be my only one) and their fans no how to do an encore!
It’s become a sort of tradition/game between the band and the fans and I can tell you that having all whole of the Accor Stadium cheering and stomping their feet was Awesome unlike anything I had seen before. And to be see, feel and be a part of was amazing and after the brilliant encore performance everyone left the concert on a high.

I’m not saying every artist should take it to that level
But I do think the encore should be a choice of the artist not just a given.

Edited to say I have been to a couple of shows where there was no encore.

In my teens I went to see Don McLean , the crowd chanted for an encore and he gave one after which the majority of fans left but a good amount of them chanted for another, which he gave but the crowd wanted more and we showed it. So he gave a second one and the audience wanted more I was sure he wouldn’t come back out but he did. And he sat down on a stool to play and said how grateful and how moved he was. He shared that at a previous concert in Australia he had not had a very good experience and was dubious about coming back. But the audience had not only moved him and he was grateful for but that his faith in his own ability to connect with an audience had been restored.

Again for me another amazing experience that I’ll always remember but also I believe a lesson to fans, if you show your authentic appreciation for the artist you just don’t know what you might get in return. But you should not just expect otherwise it is just a stupid thing that leaves artists wondering what’s the point?
