Four dams came out of the Klamath River. Salmon began swimming into reaches they could not access for more than a century. But what happens after the demolition crews leave?

We follow the river from dam removal and reservoir drawdown to fish monitoring, native planting and the work of rebuilding habitat. A study published in August 2026 estimated that about 13,310 Chinook moved beyond the former Iron Gate site in 2025. It is an encouraging sign of renewed access—not proof that the entire ecosystem has recovered.

This is a story about the fish, the Tribal communities who pushed for change, and the smaller work that continues after a dramatic transformation.
