The Warhammer 40k universe is a relentlessly grimdark setting where the horrors of existence extend far beyond simple death on the battlefield. Many factions inflict unimaginably cruel fates upon their own members; the Adeptus Mechanicus surgically lobotomizes debtors and criminals into mindless servitors, while the Blood Angels condemn their maddened brothers to the Death Company to die screaming. Even "honorable" outcomes are harrowing, as mortally wounded Space Marines are interred inside Dreadnought sarcophagi, functioning as conscious, armored corpses for millennia. Chaos offers even worse rewards, as failed or displeased champions are painfully mutated into mindless, writhing Chaos Spawn, or twisted by the Obliterator Virus into living, unrecognizable arsenals of living metal.
Beyond humanity, the galaxy's xenos species harbor equally terrifying fates. The ancient Necrontyr traded their souls for immortality, becoming the hollow, robotic Necrons—some of whom fractured into insane Flayed Ones desperate to feel flesh again. The Drukhari stave off their own soul-drain by inflicting unimaginable, decades-long torment upon captives in Commorragh, while the Genestealer Cults spend generations preparing a world for their alien gods, only to be mindlessly digested alongside their enemies by the arriving Tyranid Hive Fleet. At the dark heart of it all sits the Emperor of Mankind, a decaying, psychic corpse trapped on the Golden Throne for ten thousand years, sustained only by the daily sacrifice of thousands of psykers to keep the Imperium from collapsing into eternal darkness.
