1) Wrap you sacrificial electrode (copper, tin, zinc etc) in filtering bags (it keeps the "crud" trapped at the bottom of those bags). I use plants wintering bags from gardening supplies, sealed as pouches with a off-the-shelf kitchen bag sealer.
2) Reverse polarity for 2% to 5% of the time to avoid buildups on the target. You can easily achieve this with a astable timer and a DPDT relay wired as a polarity inverter. Some 4% reverse on 5mn periods is a good start.
3) Add a carrier macromolecule to your electrolyte. Some dextrine (less than 1%) did wonders, and it can be made by cooking starch in an oven at 160°C for an hour and a half.
4) Calculate your current relative to the surface to be plated and the electrolyte you're using (ask the internet).
