I am from the "midwest" in USA. We talk to everyone, all the time. Does not matter if it is a big city like St. Louis, or a tiny town. Clothes, kids, pets, weather are all fair game, but also, say when standing in line for something, if the people in front or behind you ask a general question- someone else in line may answer it for them! And if you are sympathetic like my husband, you may end up hearing their whole life story!

Hi guys, first of all : you 2 are GREAT ! Never stop creating these kind of videos, so helpful and funny. I'm Italian but I live half of the year in Mumbai, with my Indian partner. We Italian are like Joel maybe, we speak everywhere, with everyone 🤣 in every situation! Generally Indian people are more like Rui, they just don't talk with who they don't know. Even if we are just 2 in the elevator, sometimes not even a good morning !🤔 All the best guys, to you and your beautiful children 😘

Que engraçado! Estive enganada ! Sou inglesa, venho de uma aldeia pequenina onde falamos uns aos outros, não muito, mas um bocadinho. . Quando cheguei aqui - ao interior de Portugal comecei imediatamente a falar com toda a gente à minha volta, porque pensava que era importante comunicar e partilhar. E na verdade, quase toda a gente me respondeu com entusiasmo. Acho que no mercado perto de mim eles acham bem que estou curiosa da língua delas, e gostam destas pequenas interações sobre a vida aqui.

Tenho uma cão e conheço nomes de quase todos os cães no bairro, e não conheço nomes de donos deles. Mas conversamos com donos de cães muito bem e passeamos juntos com cães. Se preciso de falar sobre algum dono de cão, digo, por exemplo, "sabes, ontem fui ao supermercado e encontrei a dona de (nome de cão)." 😊 É normal. )))

Tenho uma sugestão para um novo vídeo: podem fazer um vídeo sobre os cuidados com os animais em Portugal? Por exemplo, sobre veterinários, parques para cães e como as pessoas tratam os animais em Lisboa.
Vamos mudar-nos com as nossas duas cadelas e estamos muito curiosas sobre este assunto.

This makes me feel so much better. We just moved into a house and have been so busy fixing things that I haven't had time to introduce myself to the neighbors. (In the US, I would typically make cookies and go knock on the door to introduce myself.) I haven't done so here and now I don't feel so bad about it! It's still weird for me though...I will probably do something for Natal at the very least...

Greetings, and maybe because I am in the North (Braga). Our first year, we greeted our neighbors with Bom Dia, Boa Tarde, Boa Noite. Since then, as we have become familiar to them, I think, the greetings changed. It is now, "Holá! Bom Dia!" I realized that we are truly vizinhos!

Vivo em Toronto, mas já morei três vezes na Quarteira, de janeiro a março. No Canadá, não falo com estranhos, mas em Portugal, falo. Falo com pessoas nos elevadores, com vizinhos do meu prédio e, uma vez, cheguei mesmo a responder a perguntas sobre como chegar a algum sítio (em português, para ganhar pontos extra!). Talvez haja algo no facto de sermos estrangeiros num país que nos torne mais abertos a falar com pessoas que não conhecemos... ou talvez eu seja apenas esquisita.

Vivo numa aldeia rural no centro de Portugal. Cumprimento toda a gente e faço o meu melhor para manter conversas sempre que posso. Uma das coisas mais difíceis para mim — vindo de Inglaterra — é que ninguém se apresenta, por isso nunca sei o nome de ninguém. Acho que é porque se conhecem todos e nem lhes ocorre que eu não saiba quem são! Que tal um podcast sobre expressões relacionadas com o tempo? As que ouço são diferentes das que aparecem numa aplicação de tradução. Obrigado pelo vosso trabalho excelente!

Thanks for the wonderful videos guys! We moved to Coimbra from Minnesota a couple of months ago. I feel like people are pretty conversational here. Not quite as much as in Minnesota, but people do fairly often say bom dia, and sometimes try to chat. I do encounter that more often when we're out with the kids. All the older ladies stop and gush over them. 😊

I just wish I knew more Portuguese to converse more. It's taking longer to pick up than I'd hoped. Your videos help though! Obrigado!

Que lindo conteúdo, é mesmo útil para aprofundar, Aqui na Venezuela falamos mesmo com pessoas sem conhecer-las, na paragem de autocarros, na fila, no autocarro, na sala de espera dum escritorio ou hospital, sem ter problema algum. Por encuanto aos vizinhos sempre tens perto, cuprimentas, falas, e assim....

Loved this. Also I like brief small talk because I am an introvert. I do not like the NYC way of blinders on walking fast, not making eye contact or smiling. But that is big city behavior. I am from a small town on the edge of a bigger town in western US. Not rural at all and not city dwellers. I enjoyed the friendly passing of people. You might get a hi or smile and nothing more. That is enough to not feel alone or unwelcome.
