The journey began under British rule. Post World War I, there was an urgent need for Indian officers in the army. The Skeen Committee recommended setting up an institution to train Indians to be officers.
On 1st October 1932, the first batch of 40 Gentlemen Cadets, called the “Pioneers”, entered IMA. The institution started with the historic Chetwode Building, which still stands tall today.
Its first Commandant was Lt Gen LP Collins, and its motto—taken from Field Marshal Chetwode’s address—became the soul of every cadet:
“The safety, honor, and welfare of your country come first, always and every time.
The honor, welfare, and comfort of the men you command come next.
Your own ease, comfort, and safety come last, always and every time.”
One of the interesting features in the development of IMA is its expansion in January 1949 into Armed Forces Academy with an addition of Joint Services Wing at Clement Town, Dehradun, where Cadets of Army, Navy and Air Force were trained.
On 1st January, 1950, the Armed Forces Academy in Dehradun was renamed as National Defence Academy. In 1954, the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy moved from Dehradun to Khadakvasla, Pune and Military Wing, which stayed back in Dehradun was renamed as Military College. In 1960, the Military College was given back its original name Indian Military Academy

IMA is not a university. It's not just a college. It is a place where boys become men, men become officers, and officers become symbols of courage.
I know the journey from Day One to the Passing Out Parade is filled with difficulties, but the final outcome is a dream for many.
it is truly inspiring when a officer define character — i.e. when you are in the dark, and when nobody else is watching that is the truest colour.
IMA doesn’t just prepare men for war — it prepares them to lead, to sacrifice, and to inspire. It leaves steel in their spine and duty in their blood.
Some go on to lead battles, some go on to lead battalions. Some die in combat. Some retire quietly after decades of service. But all of them carry IMA in their hearts forever.
In a world where shortcuts are easy and comfort is currency, IMA remains a place that chooses the harder path — because that is the path of honour.
