This is the first lecture in the course "Minimum Humanities," taught at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT)—the legendary Phystech Institute—to the intellectual cream of Russia's youth, the university's senior and graduate students. This lecture outlines (not without confusion) the course's concept. The basic idea is this: as culture develops, a person's understanding of the world shifts from spatial to temporal, a person's sense of self shifts from the external to the internal, and art moves from the expression of ideas to the depiction of the external world. Having reached the limit of pictorial representation, the pendulum of culture begins to swing back—toward the expressiveness of symbols.
