How do you know when sorghum is ripe and ready to harvest? In this video, I take you through our gardens to look at several varieties of sorghum at different stages of ripeness — and show you what I look for before I start harvesting.
Thank you for being here — and as always, I read and respond to all of your comments and questions.

First, I plant many native fruiting shrubs close to, or around the perimeter of, the gardens. These give the birds foods they prefer and attract the native insects they like to eat as well.
I also put trellises and poles throughout the gardens where birds can perch safely while looking for insects to eat. I’m pretty sure they prefer all that protein to my grains anyway! 😊
Instead of trying to keep birds out of our gardens, we create a garden where there is plenty for all of us.
And in the end, the birds have helped us in many ways.
