I bought my first beer at Old Comiskey. I was only 14 and my brother thought it would be funny to dare me to try and by a beer. The vendor never looked up at me, he just asked for the money as he poured it !
Fun fact: Ken Griffey Jr. was the last active MLB player to have played at Comiskey Park. I was at both the "Turn Out The Lights" final night game and the final game the next day. The Sox opponents that weekend were the Seattle Mariners. When Frank Thomas retired, that made Junior the last one.
In September 1972 I was there at Comiskey Park along with 50,000+ people to set the all time attendance record for a Roller Derby game between the Midwest Pioneers and the L.A. Thunderbirds.
Never got to go there, but while growing up on Long Island, I "secondarily" followed the White Sox because Comiskey Park looked cool on TV to me. Also liked the red pinstriped home unis they wore in the early 70s.
Baseball would be so much more fun if they never tore down Comisky. It had all the modern amenities in high value field seats, awesome entertainment, and a classic feel. Such a damn shame.
If they ever replaced the current ballpark, I wonder if they would be able to build a modern version of the old one
I remember holding my father's hand, as a 5-year-old and walking into the stadium for the first time and just having a sense of awe at the immensity of it
Don't forget Comisky served hard alcohol. I went there several times as a kid, but it was not family friendly😂 I was a teenager for Disco Demolition and it was great. I'm sure it was worth the lost game to Veeck who was the ultimate showman!
1st time ever at a pro baseball game in the spring of 1964. 'Twas a special time in a Little Leager's life, who wanted to be just like "The Babe", to be at White Sox Park, to watch his favorite team play. Remembered when this batter for the Chicago White Sox, Dave Nickolson came up to bat & was booed by all the fans at the park. I turned & asked my dad, why are fans booing ? My dad turned to me & said, that batter strikes out alot. Even sitting in the leftfield stands, the boos were way out of control. 1 swing, heard the crack of his mighty bat & the ⚾️ sailed way over our heads, onto the roof & and bounce out of Comisky Park onto street below. Sum say Nickolson hit the baseball clear out? The crowd there went silent followed by a huge roar which became deafening. The whole stadium was in state of awe. They claimed the ball traveled 573 feet, the longest home run ever, at the time. 'Twas a learning experience for me, for sure. I learned from that day on, to let my bat do all the talking & that will shut the crowd up. The (exit velocity) of my line-drives ⚾️ coming off my bat was ledgendary, thanks to Dave Nicholson!
15:33 I met Mike Veeck in the early 2000s. At that time he said he had been fired by 26 baseball teams, but had been hired by 27, so he had a job. He said that, as long as you get hired once more than you're fired, you'll be fine 🤣 He, and Marcus Smith, are two of my favorite all-time promoters!
That place was an absolute bandbox. It had some weird sightlines, but matter where you sat, you were close to the action -- the top row in the upper deck was still closer to the field than the first row of the upper deck in the current stadium.
Comiskey is the reason I became a stadium nerd. Being a White Sox fan I of course grew up hearing about it (I was born several months after it closed). My Dad owns three seats from it, had tones of pictures of it and he had a book on ballparks from the early 80s. It was with that book, before I even knew how to read, I was drawn to it because i wanted to look at the historic pictures, then when I was old enough to read and really started learning about it that drew me in even more, then I started taking interest in other ballparks in that book, and my fascination just grew and grew from there.
Comiskey has managed to be this big important part of my life, despite that I never got to go there in person.
That was my 2nd home from 1967-1990. My parents went on their first date Aug 24 1947 and saw Babe Ruth leave the park. Great memories and the game I bailed out of going but my brother went was Disco Demolition Night he tried to put out the fire in center his buddy broke his glasses running the bases. My father was at game 2 of the '59 WS found his pic in the BEERBATH photo of Al Smith. Went to the last game Sept 30 1990 and did shed a tear saying good bye to the old girl had some great times there
I’ve seen games at Old Comiskey, New Comiskey and Wrigley many times. Old comiskey def had not a little but A TONNNNN OF CHARM. It was a beautiful ball park. I can still see those arches as a kid now.
