This 70-year-old trumpet exercise is still one of the most effective tools for rebuilding trumpet range and trumpet endurance — and it's the same warmup I use with every comeback trumpet player I coach.

In this video, I walk through the Cichowicz flow studies, a set of trumpet warmup exercises created by legendary Chicago Symphony trumpeter Vincent Cichowicz. You'll learn what moving long tones actually train, why so many returning players break their sound between notes (and the simple fix), and how trumpet breathing exercises build the wind control that makes everything else possible.

If you're working on trumpet range exercises, a trumpet practice routine, or you're just trying to figure out the best warmup for a trumpet comeback, this is foundational work — the kind of thing that gets skipped because it looks "too basic," when it's actually the opposite.

This exercise fits inside my larger trumpet endurance and flexibility framework, and it's one of the first things I put in front of every comeback trumpet player I work with.
