I also tried doing a speedrun once using just my surface level knowledge of the any% route, it took multiple hour long attempts and the winning one was 4 hours to finally kill the ender dragon for the first time in my life. I really relate to the stronghold part, was the same for me, just unfathomably miserable to wander around like that.
