Despite heading into the series as the #2 seed, the Bulls immediately quashed any doubts about their focus. "We just wanted to get out of the blocks," Michael Jordan said. "Everyone's saying the message was this, the message was that, but we just wanted to come out and win the first one and take some of the nervousness away from us."

"We feel very fortunate, because we need Scottie to score," said coach Phil Jackson, acknowledging the off-night from Pippen. "These players will take that statistic home with them... they know we won the game, but they'll personally incorporate that into their own psyche and come back Sunday and play much better for us."

For the Hawks, Dominique Wilkins scored 14 of his 24 points in the first quarter, but the early offensive blitz from Jordan and the Bulls' overwhelming presence on the glass proved too much to overcome.
