Ruled An ACCIDENT. Her Lover Said He Locked Her Out. A Friend Swore She CALLED Later: Thelma Todd
The official story fits on one line. In December 1935, a twenty-nine-year-old film actress climbed to a garage above her own beach café, started her car to keep warm, and fell asleep in the fumes. Accident. Case closed. But the coroner's jury that ruled it an accident asked, in the same sentence, for more investigation. Her maid found her on Monday morning, still in her evening gown and mink, the ignition on and the engine silent. The man in the next apartment said he had bolted the door between them that night. A grand jury heard witness after witness for weeks, and then simply stopped. Fifty years later, a studio boss told a writer what three detectives had said to him the day after she was found. And on the Sunday she was supposedly already dead, a friend named Martha Ford picked up her telephone and heard a voice say, this is Hot Toddy.
