Jesus went to prison in January of 1998 for murder.
He was just 16 years old when he made a decision that would change the course of his life forever. After a gang member carried out a drive-by shooting targeting his brother and cousin, Jesus retaliated and took the man's life. He was sentenced to prison and wouldn't walk back into the free world for nearly three decades.
While Jesus was incarcerated, his daughter Jessica was born. Today, she's 28 years old—the same amount of time her father spent behind bars.
In this episode of Time Served, we were there as Jesus walked out of prison and experienced his first day of freedom surrounded by some of the people who waited all those years for him.
We're joined by Jessica, Jesus's cousin who survived the shooting that preceded his crime, and his wife, who chose to stay off camera while still being there to experience his first moments home.
We spend the day talking about Jesus's past, the decisions he made as a teenager, the years he lost, his regrets, his family, and what he plans to do with the second chance he has today. We also stop for some new clothes, sit down for an emotional conversation at the park, and take Jesus out for his first meal as a free man at a Chinese buffet.
This isn't a story about glorifying crime or prison. It's about consequences, redemption, family, and what happens when someone gets another chance after losing nearly three decades of their life.

"I would like to take the time to thank my wife & daughter for always being there for me. Also tons of appreciation to Time Served for sharing my story with the world. To the many people that sent positive comments to me which have been so inspiring & for those of you that have donated to my tattoo removal. All I can say to that is…. With my pounding heart in hands, I am grateful to all of you & the beautiful world you all have created.
Many may say that after almost 3 decades of solitary confinement I’ve paid my dues for taking the life of a fellow human being, yet that is not true. I owe it to my 45 year old victim, to society & to all of my loved ones who have passed away to continue to pay for my crime by living for them, to succeed in life & make them proud of the man I've become & not the 16 year old kid I once was. This burden is mine to bear & although at times it may bring me to my knees I am up for the challenge of proving myself worthy of freedom and becoming a true civilized family man.
So please keep your eyes open for me, for God has blessed me with many gifts I plan on using to touch and save as many individuals as I can from a life of crime and suffering. Glory be to God, his begotten son and the community at large for this second chance at life.
With loving respect
Jesus Ramirez
May Jesus Christ shine his light upon your every step. Amen"
